"When are you seeing Wes next?" Tara asked as the two of us lied on her bed watching Dawson's Creek.

"I don't know, probably the next time his mom works late. That's when we have movie nights." I told her and Tara raised her eyebrows.

"Every single time?"

"Lately, yeah." I looked down as Tara laughed.

"How romantic." Tara teased.

"Shut up." I mumbled and looked to the screen as Pacey kissed Joey.

"That could be you and Wes if you weren't such a chicken." Tara stated and I pushed her arm. "Hey!"

"I'm not a chicken." I scoffed, crossing my arms as I adjusted my position on the bed so I was sitting up.

"Then kiss him." Tara told me. "Next time you see him."

I didn't reply. Not at first.

There was a silence between Tara and I for a moment before I spoke again.

"Maybe I will."

Spoiler alert: I didn't.

The next time I saw Wes wasn't really a good time for a kiss.

"How long until Dad gets home?" I asked my mom as I walked into the kitchen. He had gone out grocery shopping to get stuff for dinner. "I'm hungry."

"He'll be home soon." My mom answered, turning the page of the book she was reading in the living room.

I groaned and started leaving the room when Mom's phone started to ring.

"Hello?" I heard her pick up as I reached the bottom of the stairs. I was just about at my bedroom door when I heard the pained cry leave my mother's mouth and I rushed back downstairs, thinking she was hurt.

And she was, just not in the way I thought.

"Mom?" I stopped in the living room to find her on her knees in the middle of the carpeted floor.

She was sobbing and wasn't stopping. Her phone was on the ground beside her, still in a call.

"Mom, what's going on? What happened?" I asked, landing on the ground beside her. "Mom?"

She kept crying, sniffling when she attempted to talk, but would only end up crying more.

I was terrified. I had no clue what was going on, and had no clue what I was going to find out if I picked up that phone.

It sat just inches away from my hand, the call's timer slowly increasing each second it sat there.

When my fingers first met with the phone, I hesitated and pulled my hand back for a second before I lifted the phone to my ear and spoke into it.

"Hello?" My mom continued to cry as she fell back and leaned against her chair, her hands coming up to cover her face.

I had never seen her like that, and it scared me so bad. I had seen her cry, sure, but never like that.

"Y/N, is that you?" The familiar voice of Sheriff Judy Hicks came through the phone and my breath caught in my throat.

Dread washed over me as I replied. "Uh, yeah. Yeah, it's me."

"Oh, Y/N." She paused for a moment.

"What? What happened, Judy?" I asked, looking over at my mother. "Mom won't stop crying, I don't know what's going on."

"Y/N, there was an accident. And your father was involved..."

It was like all the air was knocked from my lungs.

"But he's- He's okay, right? Judy? My dad's okay isn't he?" I struggled to get the words out and I heard her sigh on the other end.

"I'm sorry, Y/N. He passed."

"Oh." The word left my mouth in a shaky breath. I could feel my throat tighten and my eyes stung from the tears that had started to appear. "He's... He's dead?"

"I'm sorry, Y/N. There was nothing we could do." Judy explained. "Another car crashed into him. He died on impact."

By this point I was also crying, and I understood why my mom was so devastated. She was crushed.

"Y/N?"

I had been silent on my side of the line, and after letting out a sob,

"Um, Judy... I'm gonna-" I sniffled and then coughed. "I'm gonna go."

"Y/N-"

I ended the call and put down my mom's phone. I turned to look at her. She was still crying, just a little less now.

She held out her arms for me and I moved closer, crying into her shoulder as she held me tight, still sobbing.

It was about six minutes later, when my mother had gone up to her bedroom, when there was a sudden knock on the front door.

A part of me thought it was going to be my dad, and he was going to be okay. Nothing happened and he was actually fine.

Of course, I did know that wasn't the case, but I wished it was.

I opened the door, still sniffling with a tear-stained face, to find Wes with a worried expression on his face.

The moment the door was opened he practically flew into the house, his arms wrapping around me and holding me in a hug.

He didn't even need to say anything, but he did.

"My mom told me. I came as fast as I could." He told me, still hugging me.

I looked up and out the still open front door.

"I don't see a car." I mumbled and he pulled back from the hug to look out the door too before he met my eyes.

"Oh, yeah. I ran."

"All the way from your house?" I was almost at a loss for words.

"The moment my mom called me." He nodded. "I didn't... I just wanted to make sure you're okay."

"Well, I'm not." I started tearing up. "But thanks."

Wes ran all the way from his house to mine the moment he got off the phone with his mom because he wanted to see if I was okay.

Which meant he cared about me enough to not wait for his mom to come back with the car, or take the bus. He ran.

Like I would for him a year later.

I took another step forward and wrapped my arms around his middle again, and he hugged me back immediately.

"I'm sorry, Y/N."

He let me cry into his chest until his shirt was soaked from my tears and I couldn't cry anymore.
