"can't think of the last time that i truly smiled
'til you looked up at me, could you stay a while?
let's look back on past times, the good and the bad
let's make up the best years you and i have ever had"

y/n's pov

A month after my dad's funeral, I had started getting a little better.

It was now nearing the end of September and I had been filling all my time with school to get my mind off of other stuff.

And it had worked, it didn't hurt as much to think about my dad anymore.

But focusing only on school also meant I hadn't been hanging out with my friends much outside of school.

So when I was doing homework in my bedroom and got a text from Wes, I smiled.

Wesley :/ | my mom's working late tonight if you wanna stay over and watch movies
i'll even cook for u

I laughed and ignored the algebra textbook in front of me to pick up my phone and reply.

i'll come over | y/n
but just to make sure you don't burn your house down while trying to cook

Then I stared at my phone waiting for a reply.

Wesley :/ | awesome
and i'm not that bad at cooking :(
what do you wanna watch?

I thought for a moment, but there wasn't really anything I felt like watching, I just wanted to hang out with him.

anything, you pick | y/n

Wesley :/ | 50 shades of gray it is

what the fuck | y/n

Wesley :/ | i'm kidding
i'll pick something good

I liked his last message then quickly turned off my phone and got up from my desk to start packing a bag.

---

"So what's on tonight's agenda?" I asked as Wes and I sat down on the couch in his house.

"Jurassic Park." He said with a grin.

"I haven't watched that in ages, oh, my God." I told him, almost excitedly, as he started setting up the movie. "Not since we were, like, 9. Me and my dad watched them all together."

At the mention of my dad, Wes' head turned towards me. And this time I didn't get sad, even if I did feel it on the inside, I didn't show it.

"We could watch this, then make food, then watch more movies after." Wes suggested as he found the movie. "Or we could make food after, like, two movies."

"After this one's fine." I said and he pressed play.

It had definitely been too long since I had last watched it, because I barely remembered the main plot, apart from the fact people went to a dinosaur theme park and the dinosaurs were real.

So after watching, when we were in the kitchen making spaghetti, Wes was explaining different 'fun facts' and things about the theme.

"-And so it was actually a book first, and the whole Mr. DNA scene was actually just Steven Spielberg's way to just shove all the exposition from the book into the movie really quickly, which is pretty clever because it doesn't even seem-" Wes stopped and looked at me. "What?"

I hadn't realized I had just been watching, or staring at, him the whole time.

He was talking with his hands, and running his hand through his hair while he cooked the pasta.

I didn't mean to stare, because I was listening to him. He just looked so cute while he talked.

"What?" He asked again with a chuckle and I took a few steps forward so I was right in front of him.

Then I took his face in my hands and pulled him towards me in a kiss.

Wes kissed me back immediately, his hands dropping down so one was on my hip and the other was on my back when he pulled me closer.

When we pulled apart Wes swallowed and took a breath. He stood frozen for a moment.

"What... What was that for?"

"Um, it was- Shit! Wes, the pasta!" I quickly pointed to the pot that was boiling over and starting to spill.

"Oh, shit." Wes quickly turned around and started turning off the stove.

Then I turned back to the sauce I had been making, or heating up from a jar.

Wes took the pot over to the sink and started to strain it while I finished up with the sauce.

Once we had dished up the food we went back to the living room and I picked the next movie, Pitch Perfect.

"Just another part of your rom-com-cation." I told Wes as it started. I didn't know what to say after I kissed him, but I wanted to say something.

"Isn't this a musical?" He asked me and I nodded.

"Oh, yeah." I answered with a grin. "Only the best musical of all time."

"Really?"

"People will argue and riot and disagree, but I'm right." I told him before taking a bite of my food. "Nothing compares."

Wes chuckled a little and then we both went quiet, eating and watching the movie.

But every now and then, I would glance over at Wes.

Neither of us even mentioned the kiss for the rest of the night, and it wouldn't be brought up again until Saturday, October 3rd, 2020.

6 days after this day, Sunday, September 28th, 2020.

But in exactly one year from this first kiss, Wes would be murdered.
