"when you know, you know
when you know, you know"---

"Okay, opinion on... Chad."
Tara made a face at me. "Ew. Chad? No way. Pass."
"You can't pass!" I laughed and she glared playfully.
We were a month and a half into summer break and I was sleeping over at Tara's house.
We had been playing a game that originally started with characters and celebrities, but now we were talking about real boys we knew.
"Fine, my opinion is that he's gross."
"Okay, sure, yeah."
"My turn." Tara smiled. "Opinion on... Wes."
"...He's Wes." I shrugged. "I don't know."
"Oh, come on. Boring." Tara scoffed.
"Whatever, Miss 'My opinion is that he's gross.' You can't say shit."
"Yeah, but I want to know your genuine opinion on Wes."
"Why?" I asked.
"Because I wanna know if my ship is sailing."
"Please never say that again."
"Wes x Y/N is my OTP."
"Shut up, Tara."
"Oh, come on. In all seriousness," She sat up. "Didn't you guys have a sleepover the other night?"
"Yeah? How'd you even know about that?"
"I overheard Wes telling Chad. Why didn't you tell me?"
"I don't know? I didn't think it mattered."
"You didn't think it mattered? Oh, God, Y/N."
"What?"
"Have you met me? Of course it matters."
"He only slept over because my parents said I could have a friend over for the night while they had their dinner party and you couldn't come." I reasoned.
"Okay, sure, but what's this I hear about him hanging around all day and helping you clean?" Tara wiggled her eyebrows.
"He's sweet, okay." I reasoned, smiling at the thought. "He offered."
"Because he's madly in love with you. I'm calling it right here." Tara held her hands up before pointing. "And you absolutely have a crush on him."
"I don't!"
"Liar!"
"Girls, keep it down in there. It's late." The voice of Tara's mother called through the door.
"Sorry, mom!"
"Sorry, Ms. Carpenter!"
We then met each other's eyes and laughed. Nothing was particularly funny, but it was late. Everything was funny.
About an hour later, Tara and I were both lying in her bed and the lights were off.
"Tara, if I hypothetically thought that maybe I thought Wes was cute, what would you say?" I asked and she basically shot up in her seat.
"Excuse me?"
"Hypothetically!" I tried to reason but she cut me off.
"You're insane. You're so into him."
"I said maybe I thought he was cute. Key word, maybe."
Tara scoffed. "How can you 'maybe' think someone's cute? You either do or you don't."
"Well, I just think he has a cute smile." I said and Tara smiled to herself. "And he's just a nice guy."
"First it's that, then it's making babies when your parents aren't home."
"Why does it sound like you're talking from experience?" I questioned with a quiet laugh and she rolled her eyes.
"Look, Y/N, I'm not even kidding. You are so oblivious. Wes Hicks wants you so bad and you are so into him." She insisted. "Now, I'm going to sleep. You can sit here and realize you're in love with him."
"No, I'm going to sleep too. Thanks."

I went home pretty early the next day because Tara had plans with Amber. Of course.
So I had nothing else to do for the entire day.
I was bored, so I decided to go for a walk to the movie theatre in Woodsboro just to see if there was anything interesting enough to watch.
It was pretty quiet when I got there, there was only a mother and her two small children getting tickets from the boy behind the counter.
When I saw the boy's face, I raised my eyebrows.
Wesley Hicks was working at the movie theatre.
He looked up from the screen in front of him and a smile grew on his face. He chuckled lightly. "Y/N! Hey."
"Hey, Wes." I couldn't help but smile from his own. His happiness was practically contagious. "Since when have you worked here?"
"Oh. Since the end of school. My mom wanted me to get a job for the summer so..." He gestured around and to the badge pinned to his chest. "Here I am."
I watched as he brought up his hand and ran it through his hair. Then he stretched one of his arms behind his head and his dark polo hiked up a little.
I tore my eyes away and back to his face.
"So, are you here to watch something or..?" Wes asked and I shook my head.
"Oh, no. I kinda just came to see if there was anything good on. I'm so bored." I shrugged and Wes smiled.
He checked his watch. "Well, my shift actually ends in 20 minutes. If you're willing to wait, we can do something after?"
"Yeah." I nodded, still smiling. "Yeah, that sounds good."
"Cool." He grinned.
"I'll just wait outside then." I suggested.
"You could always just sit in here." He gestured around to the seats where people usually sit when meeting people or waiting for their session to get closer. "I mean, it's air conditioned."
"Yeah, okay. Thanks." At this moment in time, I felt awkward around Wes. I had no clue why. It wasn't like I liked him or anything.
He was just my friend who I now found... moderately attractive.
Okay, maybe a little more than moderately. I had thought as I watched him push his sweaty hair back while he served drinks to a couple around our age.
Wes looked over at me from where he stood and smiled.
And judging by his smile, and then the way it made my stomach feel like butterflies were fluttering around inside, I first started to think that Tara might've been right.
