"What do you mean he's in the other room talking to Kat?" I ask. I thought she was dead. I heard her heart stop. There's no way she's alive. No way...
"The nurse didn't give her the stronger antibiotic's that she needed. The doctor came in as soon as you passed out and revived her!" Austin shouts. Oh my god. I jump out of my bed and look through the window on Kat's hospital room. Phil is seated next to the bed, holding her hand, and her parents are talking to the doctor in the corner of the room.
Phil looks distressed still, I can tell he's in a lot of pain. Dried tears still stain his face from when he thought he lost the one he loves. I can still feel the sadness inside me, I almost lost my best friend, forever. Also inside of me I am happier than ever. Kat is alive, she's in good hands, and she's.... well... alive.
I knock on the door to the room and Kat's mom motions for me to come in. I walk in and seat myself next to Phil and grab Kat's other hand, knowing this won't be the last time I hold it.
"So... how do you feel?" I ask Phil. Phil looks up at me with the biggest grin I've ever seen on him in a long time. I tear slides down his cheek and he pulls me into a hug.
"I feel so great. I- I don't know what I would have done without her here..." He says crying tears of happiness. He looks back as me and gives me a small laugh. "How do you feel?"
"I can say I feel about the exact same way as you do." I laugh. I feel hands on both my shoulders and I turn to see Austin on my right and Alan to my left, both smiling at me. I jump out of my chair and pull them into a group hug as I begin to cry out of joy.
"I'm so glad she's ok." I let out. Austin rubs my back and laughs a little and we all break out of the hug.
"I am too. I couldn't see one of my friends die, and two of my friends worlds crash down in front of them in one sitting." Alan jokes.
Kat opens her eyes and smiles, she's just glad to be alive. Phil immediately grabs her hand and scoots closer to the bed, her parents rush over to her side.
"Sweetie?" her mom says. Kat looks over at her mother and smiles even wider.
"Hi Mom. Hi Dad." She says. Her parents embrace her in a group hug and her mother starts to cry. I can't tell if they're sadness or from joy. I can see that her dad is absolutely happy though. I've never seen a smile that big on his face. Well that's probably because I never see him...
"Honey I'm so sorry we weren't here. I wish I could be at home with you all the time!" Her mother says as they pull away from the hug.
"It's ok mom. I'm just glad you're here now" Kat says with a big grin. I hear someone walk in behind us.
"Edith?" she asks. I turn and she motions for me to come out in the hallway. I walk out.
"What's up?" I ask.
"Your dad wants to see you. He says its urgent. Come this way please." She says with a smile. I return a smile to her but this is the last thing I want to be doing right now. He almost killed my best friend, there's no way I can forgive him now. I wander down the hall and down the stairs to my dads room. The nurse opens the door and shuts it behind me, causing me to shiver. Being alone with him was the worst.
"What?" I say crossing my arms.
"Don't be like that you bitch. I'm pretty sure your prissy friend has told you what happened by now." He says while smiling. I wanted to punch that smile right off his fucking mouth. He's such a prick I wish he died in that fire.
"Oh really? Nooooo. Tell me what happened and how much of a great person you are." I say walking towards him. A look so familiar spreads on his face and he grabs the collar of my shirt and pulls me towards him.
"Listen bitch. If you or blondie say a word I have people who will kill you. Is that clear?" he commands. I roll my eyes.
"Bull fucking shit. You don't have friends." I spit.
"Remember the big scary guys I had over when you were in the 5th grade who caused you to have surgery? They're out of prison. So I'd keep your mouth shut. Now get out." I back away. No. I can't let him get away with this one. Not this time. But I can't put Kat in any danger.... Fuck.
.....
It's been about a week since the whole incident with Kat happened. The whole week I've been staying at Alan's waiting for my house to be fixed, the construction workers were there right now. Kat is now home and resting and right now Alan, Austin, Phil, Tino, Aaron, Andrea, and I are on our way to comfort her. She's not allowed to leave the house till she's better, her parents have taken off some time from work so they can care for her. Surprising. No offence to her parents but they always treated . The police will be there when we arrive to ask Kat and I about the whole thing. My dad has already spewed lies from his disgusting mouth that he told Kat and I to go by. I still don't believe that there's people out to get me... but I can't take any chances.
We walk up Kat's street and reach her house, a police car parked out front. Andrea puts a hand on my shoulder and gives me a reassuring nod. Andrea and Aaron had to wait outside until questioning was over. I hop up Kat's porch steps and swing open the door.
"Edith? We're in the living room honey!" I hear Kat's mom shout. I slip off my vans and walk into the living room to see Kat's parents on one couch, Kat on the other, and a cop on a stool. I take a spot next to Kat.
"Now Edith, where were you on the night of the fire?" The cop asks.
"I was out with my friend Austin in the woods." I say. I can still tell the truth at this point. I see Kat give me a look and I try and keep my cheeks from getting pink.
"What happened when you found there was a fire in your home? You were not at the scene when fire department officials arrived.
"I was at my friend Alan's house when I got a call from Austin who had walked by my house saying it was on fire. I was too emotional to go back so that's why I went to see my dad the next day." The cop nods.
"Katherine wh-" Kat cuts off the cop.
"I prefer Kat." She says with a smile. The cop rolls his eyes and continues questioning.
"Kat. Why were you in Edith's bathroom during the incident when she wasn't home?" He asks. Kat looks at the floor and sighs.
"I had a fight with one of my friends and I went to her house to get help. I climbed up her window and she wasn't in there but I had to use the bathroom. I couldn't get out. I heard someone come in the window though. I'm pretty sure they started the fire. I tried to have Edith's dad help me but he got lit on fire and couldn't hear me." She lies. That's what my dad told us to tell the police. So it looked like someone else did it.
"Well ladies it seems someone climbed up into your window and started the fire in Edith's room. Do you know anyone who would want to light your house on fire Edith?" He asks me. I gulp.
"Uh no. My friends are the only one's who climb up my window so I had no idea who would have done this." Oh shit. I shouldn't have said that.
"Do you know where your friends were that night?" He asks me. I'm put on the spot so I give the answer I give when I'm flustered.
"Uh I don't know." I mutter.
"Hm... and you said you got in a fight with your friend that night Kat?" He questions. Kat's eyes widen and she sits up a bit.
"Well yeah but he wouldn't have done it. I know that for a fact." She says.
"Well we're all guilty until proven innocent Katherine. I have all the information I need for now folks. I'll call if I need something else." He says standing up and shaking every ones hands.
"Thank you officer." Kat's dad says. Her parents go into the kitchen and begin to talk to each other as the cop walks outside. As he enters his car he stops and stares at my friends, giving them a suspitious look.
"Oh fuck. That was bad. Fuck fuck fuck." says Kat putting her face in her hands.
Fuck was right. We just placed all of our friends as suspects...
