I can remember very clearly the day I became friends with Kat. It was in ninth grade and we had talked a few times but it was rare. I walked into science class and took my seat as the bell rang. Mr. P walked up to the front of the class.
"Alright class as you might remember from Friday I introduced the atom project to you and you have to pick a partner." He said. The whole class nodded in agreement but most wouldn't stop talking. Kat was the loudest, talking about the mall or something with her friends. I saw the look of frustration on his face as he told the class multiple times to be quiet.
"CLASS!" He shouted. Everyone sat and faced the front of the room and immediately shut up. "Now I will assign you partners. You don't deserve to pick them, you have to earn that right." He shouted. I could hear sighs and groans all over the room as he started assigning the losers (like me) to work with all the popular kids (like Kat). One by one I saw looks of dismay and sadness on everyone's faces. Then I finally heard my name.
"Edith." He stood in front of my desk and looked around the room. His eyes paused on Kat. "And Kat." I turned around to see the most bitter look on Kat's face. Won't this be great I thought. I picked up my books and made my way over to Kat's desk and took a seat.
At first Kat seemed as if she didn't want anything to do with me. I wouldn't blame her I was a weird kid in ninth grade.
As time went on I realized how much I hate it when people dislike me and I try and use my humor on her, insulting people in the room or Mr. P whenever possible to make her laugh. It worked a few times. The most I ever got out of her was when I made fun of Cindy McGee when she mistakenly thought that babies still came from the stork. Did she ever pay attention in health class? No.
Then about a week later, the day before the project was due, she came to my house so we could work on the project together and finish up what I started. We worked mostly in silence, there was no one I could poke fun at to make her laugh besides making jokes about my cat that I used to have.
She walked over to my stereo and inspected it. "Can I play some music?" she asked. I look over to her as she begins to plug in her phone.
"Uh... sure." I say. I was expecting the worse. Considering the social group Kat was in I was ready to stab out my ear drums. She hit play and I cringe, but then I hear a familiar voice flood my ears. She played Bring Me The Horizon. Bring Me The Horizon. I spin around and see her mouthing the words as the song plays on.
"You like these guys?" I ask. I was shocked and surprised. She looked over at me and smiled. "Yeah. No one really knows what I listen to so here you go." Her tone is the nicest I've ever heard. And idea sparks in my mind.
"Are you going to see them next week?" I ask. "I already have my ticket." I point to my cork board and she looks at my ticket.
"Hell yeah I'm going to see them. We should meet up or something when we get there. I don't have anyone to go with." She says. I nod and she kneels beside me so we can work on our project.
We finished the project within the next hour but she stayed for about 3 more hours. We talked and talked and talked. Mostly about concerts, the experiences we'd had at them, and future ones that we planned on going to. We made lots of plans and when she left my house she said "Bye concert buddy!" I felt so happy. I made a new friend...
.....
I walked up to the line at the huge venue with Alan, Aaron, and Phil with me. I see Kat standing at the end of the line all alone and I shouted her name. She looked up and motioned for us to come over. I wasn't sure how she'd react to my friends but it went better than I expected.
