Merlin
The Glass Princess
Chapter 1
Arthur awoke with the morning sun pushing its way around the curtains and into the room. “Honestly what is the point in them?” He muttered squinting at the curtains that wear letting in so much light they might as well have been open. He sighed and rolled over to face his beautiful wife Gwen who was still fast asleep. Arthur looked at her perfect lips that were curved into a slight smile as she slept and thought it would be nice to kiss her awake. He propped himself up on one elbow and lent down towards her. Suddenly there was a loud crash and Gwen woke with a start jumping up and hitting Arthur in the face with her head. “Ow!” Arthur cried, his hands flying to his nose. “Oh Arthur! I’m so sorry!” Gwen cried, her hands flying out to her husband to check he was ok. “It’s fine.” Arthur said though in fact he was wondering if his nose was broken. Then he looked up to see Merlin trying to sneak unnoticed from the room. “Merlin!” Arthur yelled and Merlin stopped in his tracks and slowly turned around looking rather sheepish. Arthur glared at him and then glared even more when he saw the plate of food all over the floor. “Rat bate is it?” Arthur asked sarcastically gesturing to the food with his head. “Yes…um…no…yes…” Merlin stuttered. “Well I suggest you clear it up, we don’t want any nasty accidences now do we.” Arthur said.
“What accidents could food cause?” Merlin asked confused.
“Oh you would be surprised.” Arthur said and this time Merlin took the hint.
“Oh, of course sire, right away.” He said bending down and hurriedly picking up what had been Arthurs breakfast; he really didn’t want to find out what sort of punishments Arthur could come up with using food.Down in the armoury the knights were preparing for a long, and probably rather boring, journey. Percival and Elyan were laughing at Gwaine who was searching the room. “Come on guys! Where have you put it?” Gwaine asked after searching inside all the helmets. “Put what?” Percival asked grinning broadly.
“My cloak! Where have you put it!?” Gwaine asked frustrated.
“Cloak? We haven’t seen your cloak.” Elyan said biting back a smile.
“Oh come on! This just isn’t funny!” Gwaine said which made them laugh even more. Then Gwaine noticed something, Percival was wearing two cloaks. He lunged forward and tried to wrestle the cloak off him. After a few minutes Percival finally gave in and fell to his knees laughing as Gwaine pulled his cloak on and crossed to the other side of the room. He sat down on a bench next to Leon, who was sat elbows on knees, his chin resting on his hands, his fingers tapping out a fast anxious beat. “Are you ok?” Gwaine asked him but he didn’t seem to hear. “Leon?”
“What?” Leon asked snapping out of his trance.
“Are you ok?” Gwaine asked again. Leon didn’t treat the question to an answer; he just turned back to what he was doing. “She will be fine you know.” Gwaine told him and Leon’s fingers stopped drumming and he rubbed his hands over his face. “I know but maybe, just in case, I could ask Arthur if I could stay here, just to be sure.” Leon said slowly. “Leon no. Look you can’t be by her side constantly for nine months! She will be fine! She said herself you should go didn’t she.” Gwaine told him. Leon sighed, “I know, I just, I love her and I don’t want…you know; history to repeat itself.”
“It won’t, that’s not going to happen to you twice now stop worrying and help me get back at those two idiots over there.” Gwaine said with a grin. Leon sighed and then smiled. “Ok then.” Leon said.
“Good, so, here’s the plan...”
“Merlin I swear I have seen snails faster than you.” Arthur said as Merlin staggered through the door carrying Arthurs armour. “Yeh but they don’t have to carry a tone of metal up five flights of stairs.” Merlin said as he dropped the armour onto the table with a loud bang. “Just shut up and hurry up will you; we leave in half an hour.” Arthur said holding is arms out so Merlin could put his armour on. “Where exactly are we going? No, wait, let me guess, is it somewhere deadly and dangerous where we could be crushed, eaten or tortured?” Merlin asked as he pulled the armour over Arthurs head. “We are going to the kingdom of Nilemah.” Arthur said.
“What!? Why?! Nilemah is not a friend of Camelot.” Merlin said and in his shock he let go of the strap he was fastening and Arthurs armour fell around his feet. Arthur sighed and stepped out of the armour and Merlin set about putting it back on him. “It is now. The king is dying, as good as dead and his son will be taking over. We have both agreed that over fifty years of feuding between our kingdoms is enough; so we are travelling there to sign a peace treaty.” Arthur explained.
“Who is this son?” Merlin asked intrigued.
“Prince Eldred Blakewood. A nice man; quite quiet really, from what I can work out, but pleasant.” Arthur said.
“Prince Eldred Blakewood.” Merlin repeated putting on a posh voice.
“You better not be mocking a prince Merlin, you know the punishment for that.” Arthur told him. “But he isn’t even here!” Merlin protested. “And anyway, I wasn’t mocking, it’s just a posh name.” Merlin said as he finished tightening Arthurs armour. “Mock that name again and you will be straight in the stocks.” Arthur said pointing a threatening finger at Merlin before picking up his sword and walking to the door. “Is that just an excuse to put me in the stocks?” Merlin asked.
“Yep.” Arthur called back before strolling out of the door.Arthur looked around at his knights and Merlin who were all lined up with their horses, as he hurried down the steps. “Arthur!” A familiar voice called from behind him. He turned to see Guinevere hurrying down the steps after him. “Arthur wait.” She said as she reached him. “Arthur, please be careful.” She said. Arthur took her hand him his. “It’s only signing a bit of paper Gwen, what’s the worst that could happen?” He said softly. Gwen smiled at him,
“I know.” She sighed “Bye then.” She said smiling sweetly as Arthur brought her hand to his lips and kissed it. “I’ll be back soon.” He said.
“You better.” She said as she watched him hurry down the rest of the steps.“Leon, I’ll be fine.” Rosa said for the fourth time. “Look you need to go with Arthur.” She told her husband. “Are you sure? I can stay.” Leon said.
“Leon! Go!” She ordered.
“Ok, ok.” He said admitting defeat.
“Good. I’ll miss you.” She said smiling up at him as she wrapped her arms around his neck. “I’ll miss you too.” He said placing his hand on her swollen belly. “Both of you.” He said making Rosa giggle. “I love you.” She said gazing into his warm blue eyes.
“I love you more.” He whispered leaning down and kissing her. She closed her eyes and felt a warmth spread from her chest. “Bye.” He said quietly.
“Bye.” She whispered back as he pulled away from her and walked down the steps to the horses. Gwaine smiled at him, “So you are joining us after all.” Gwaine said with a grin. “Yeh well we still have that thing to do, don’t we?” Leon said smiling. Gwaine looked over to Percival and Elyan with a sly smile. “We do indeed.” He said quietly before hauling himself onto his horse. Leon looked back to see Rosa stood on the steps next to Gwen. She smiled and waved at him and he smiled back. Then the group set off out of Camelot leaving the Gwen and Rosa far behind them.*********************************************************************
