Chapter 20 - Alcoholicisum

Merlin awoke to a strange sound. The sky was still dark, the moon shining high above him. He rolled over to try and find out what the noise was and saw Gwaine, sat by the burnt out fire, hitting two pieces of flint together trying to get a spark to light. Merlin sat up and whispered the spell and the fire light up. “Thanks.” Gwaine said dropping the stones and leaning back. “Have you been up all night?” Merlin asked and Gwaine nodded. “Are you alright?” He asked and Gwaine hesitated for a moment. “I could do with some mead.” He concluded and Merlin smiled.
“Sorry, I can’t help with that.”
“Can’t you magic some up? There must be a spell to conger up mead or ale or something!” Gwaine said and Merlin smiled.
“Tell me what it is and I will use it.” Merlin said.
“Alcoholicisum!” Gwaine said grinning.
“I am sure that isn’t a really spell Gwaine.” Merlin said and Gwaine sighed.
“Well it should be.” He muttered.
“Are you sure you are ok Gwaine?” Merlin asked as he watched his friend. Gwaine sighed again. “What do you think Merlin?” He asked looking up into his eyes and Merlin nodded. “We will find her, I promise you.” Merlin said and Gwaine nodded.
“I know…but when? It will take at least another two days to reach the isle of the blessed.”  Gwaine said and Merlin bit his lip, suddenly, he had an idea.
“Not necessarily.” Merlin said with a smile.

“Oh my god…is that?” Gwaine stuttered as he stared at the dragon flying towards them. “Yep.” Merlin said grinning.
“Is…is it safe?” Gwaine asked, his hand on his sword.
“Yes…he obeys me.” Merlin said and Gwaine nodded.
“What is it now young warlock?” The Great Dragon asked as he landed in front of them. “It…it can talk?” Gwaine stuttered.
‘It’ can hear you Sir Gwaine.” The Great Dragon said.
“How do you know me?!” Gwaine demanded sounding a little afraid.
“I know a great many things loyal knight.” The Great Dragon said. Gwaine was about to continue but Merlin stepped in. “Can you please take us to the isle of the  blessed?” Merlin asked and the Great Dragon sighed.
“I am not a horse Merlin.” He said.
“Please…” Merlin pleaded innocently and the Great Dragon sighed and Merlin grinned knowing he had won. (A/N. Am I the only one who finds the thought for the Great Dragon sighing amusing? Yes? Thought so…what the hell is wrong with me? Sorry…where were we?)

Gwaine clung to Merlin’s back as the Great Dragon swooped through the night air. He still wasn’t sure if he believed what was happening. His hair blew out behind him, rippling back like waves. He felt amazing, it was a brilliant experience. The Great Dragon soared down towards the ground and Merlin and Gwaine let out cries of excitement and terror. The Great Dragon landed perfectly to their relief and the dismounted. “Thank you.” Merlin said and the Great Dragon bowed his head and Merlin smiled slightly before turning to face the lake before them. He walked down the pier and clambered into the boat, Gwaine was about to follow when the Great Dragon stopped him “Sir Gwaine?” He said and Gwaine turned back. “Choose wisely.” The Great Dragon said knowingly and Gwaine gave him a confused look. “Umm ok, thanks.” He said sounding sure before going to join Merlin as The Great Dragon took off into the sky.

“Why did we have to go through the catacombs?” Gwaine complained as they walked through the tunnels, the flame of the torch lighting the way along with the skeletons. “I hate catacombs!” Gwaine said as he watched a skull that seemed to be staring at him from a shelf. “Shh.” Merlin said.
“I didn’t even know there were catacombs under the isle of the blessed.” Gwaine said kicking at the sand on the ground. “It’s where they buried all the priests and priestess of the old religion.” Merlin explained. “You know some say they are like guards…that the skulls still live and devour all who enter.” Merlin said calmly.
“Oh…thanks for that thought Merlin, really appreciate it.” Gwaine said as he looked around nervously at the skulls watching him. Suddenly, as he watched it, a skull turned its…skull, to follow Gwaine as he passed it. Gwaine jumped and grabbed Merlin’s arm. “Gwaine!” Merlin cried pulling away.
“Th-that Sk-skull! I-it Mo-ved!” Gwaine stuttered.
“It’s just your imagina-…oh god.” Merlin said as the whole row of skulls turned to stare at them. Suddenly every skull was turning to stare, then, one on a high shelf over their heads fell, jaw snapping violently, the empty eye sockets somehow glaring. “RUN!” Merlin screamed, but they already were.

Morgana lay Eirawen down on the stone table. She smiled a little as she saw how pale her skin was, how cold she was. “My lady they are coming.” Cally whispered from the doorway. “Good.” Morgana said not taking her gaze from Eirawen. “Almost time now.” She said to Eirawen, removing the rose petal from the golden cup and placing it on Eirawen’s lips and smiling as the colour began to re-enter her cheeks. “Your knight in shining armour will be here soon, don’t you worry”

Gwaine could see the door at the end of the tunnel, it was a huge slab of rock that was slowly moving down, sealing off the door way. Merlin was using every spell he knew to fend off the skulls as they ran, desperately trying to reach the door way. “We are never gonna make it!” Gwaine yelled.
“You go! You can if I stay back!” Merlin yelled.
“No!” Gwaine said.
“I will be fine! Just find Eirawen!” Merlin said shoving Gwaine frantically forward. Gwaine fell to his knees and rolled under the stone that had almost touched the round. “Merlin come on!” Gwaine yelled but he could just hear Merlin muttering spells. “MERLIN!” Gwaine yelled as the stone hit the ground with a thud, sealing Merlin inside.
