Chapter 4- The feast

Arthur was sat at the head of the table with Prince Eldred, Princess Adeline and Eirawen. He had to admit that these people really did know how to partly. There was drink and food galore, entertainers, a wonderful band and even a dance floor, (which Arthur made a mental note to stay clear of at all costs.) and the atmosphere was amazing. The Prince sat smiling, his hand linked with Eirawen’s who was smiling back at her husband with a gentle caring look; but Arthur could see Gwaine on his right staring, his eyes full of pain as he watched the couple until he noticed Arthur watching him and smiling before taking a long swig from his goblet. Merlin was staying just behind Gwaine with a jug of mead in his hand knowing that Gwaine was probably going to want quite a few refills. Leon cheered and clapped as Elyan was lead onto the dance floor by a young brunette soon to be followed by Percival and an attractive blonde. Gwaine tired his hardest to join in the cheery mood but found it very difficult. Leon seemed to notice this and nodded to Merlin who moved forward to refill their cups. Gwaine smiled slightly and downed the mead in one and holding out the goblet for another refill; Merlin raised his eyebrows slightly but complied. Merlin glanced over to the other side of the room and saw Cally and she smiled and gave him a small wave which he returned making her giggle and blush. Leon saw this and smiled before whistling mockingly until Merlin spilt mead down Leon’s front as he bent over to refill their cups, again. “Oops, slipped.” Merlin said with a grin a Leon scowled before pushing his chair back knocking the jug into Merlin. “Oops.” Leon said and then it was Merlin’s turn to scowl. But soon they both became distracted by Percival who seemed to have stepped on the girl’s feet he had been dancing with and was now stood awkwardly as she hopped to a chair to check her toes weren’t broken.

Arthur watched his knights and Merlin laughing and dancing with a sad smile. Sometimes he hated being a king, sometimes he just wished he could muck about and joke with the others instead of sit and watch. However he could see the whole room very well from the head of the table; he could see Elyan dancing, Percival looking awkward as the girl he had been dancing with clutched her foot in pain, Merlin gazing at that maid he had seen earlier and Leon and Gwaine sat at the table getting more and more drunk by the second. He noticed Gwaine still watching the prince and Eirawen and he felt sorry for his friend, he knew how he would have felt if it had been Gwen. Just then his thoughts were interrupted as a good looking serving boy came to refill their goblets, Arthur saw Adeline smile sweetly at the servant as she declined the offer of a refill before excusing herself and leaving the room.

Percival had finally returned to the table after the incident with crushing his dance partner’s toes to find his friends very drunk, especially Gwaine, though he wasn’t surprised by that at all. “So? Exactly how many toes are broken?” Leon asked with a childish giggle as Percival sat down. “Oh shut up.” Percival said picking up a goblet and taking a long swig. When he put it back on the table he frowned, staring at Gwaine. “Is he alright?” He asked and Leon turned to see Gwaine swaying rather violently in his chair, a strange forced looking grin on his face, his eyes fixed at the head of the table. Leon shrugged. “Not sure.” Leon said after a moment’s consideration. “Let’s ask! Gwaine are you alright?” Leon asked cheerily. Gwaine turned to stare at them for a moment before bursting out laughing. “He’s fine.” Leon said turning back to Percival with a grin as Gwaine continued laughing. Percival raised his eyebrows but didn’t press the matter, but soon Gwaine’s laughter became hiccups and Merlin knew what was coming and quickly shoved the now empty jug into Gwaine’s hands just as Gwaine threw up. “I think it’s time we all retired, don’t you?” Merlin said grimacing as Gwaine handed him back the jug. Percival nodded before taking Leon’s arm and pulling him to his feet, then he looked around for Elyan and saw him still dancing with the brunette girl and decided Elyan wouldn’t want to be sleeping just yet.

Merlin practically dragged a babbling Gwaine through the corridors with Percival and Leon stumbling along behind. “Honestly, if the river was made of mead a bet this lot could drain it dry in a matter of minutes.” Cally said with a smile as she walked passed with an empty jug in her hands. “This will be the fourteenth time I have had to refill this in the last hour!” She said with a lightly laugh raising the jug. Merlin stopped in his tracks and smiled shyly. “I know; it’s ridiculous.” Merlin said with a nervous laugh. “Looks like your friends might be some of the culprits.” She said looking at Gwaine, Leon and Percival. “Yeh.” Merlin said as he thought about just how beautiful her eyes were. “Anyway, I should hurry and get this filled before they start fights over it. Night Merlin” She said with a smile as she turned and continued off down the corridor. “Night Cally.” He called after her and she turned to blow him a kiss. Merlin stood and stared at her as she went and wondered how anyone could be so beautiful. However he was soon pulled from his trance as Gwaine fell in a heap on the floor. He could hear Leon singing behind him soon followed by Percival yelling at him to keep moving. Merlin sighed and heaved Gwaine off the floor before continuing dragging him along the corridor.

High up on the battlements in front of the full moon stood a figure cloaked in black. The figure stepped nimbly around the bodies of the guards that lay strewn on the floor until they stood looking down onto the river Haimelyn  itself. The figure lifted a small wooden instrument to their lips and began to play. As they played they looked down onto the water to see the reflection of the moon glittering over the surface. Then, their eyes began to glow a warm amber and the water began to ripple, violently as if caught in a storm. The figure continued to play her song and slowly another sound began to grow, rising out of the water. Dark shapes were moving under the water, rising towards the surface, getting closer and closer and closer before emerging into the night.
