Chapter 7-A day out

Merlin sped through the doors to Arthurs chambers much to Arthur’s annoyance. “Merlin! Have you ever heard of knocking?!” Arthur yelled.
“Morgana!” Merlin panted “God why are there so many stairs?!”
“What?” Arthur asked confused.
“Message…apples…Gwaine’s chambers.” Merlin panted.
“I haven’t a clue what you are on about Merlin.”
“Just follow me!” Merlin sighed before turning and leaving the room. Arthur glanced around him and sighed before following his manservant.

“Where is this message then?” Arthur asked as Merlin opened the door.
“It’s he-“ Merlin trailed off as he saw Gwaine leaning back in a chair munching on an apple. “Gwaine!” Merlin yelled looking at the table where the message had been.
“What?!” Gwaine asked his mouth full of apple.
“You ate the message!?”
“No I didn’t!” Gwaine said as he swallowed.
“Well where is it then?” Merlin asked but Gwaine didn’t reply. “Gwaine! That’s was important evidence!”
“I was hungry!” Merlin sighed.
“Does anyone care to explain what the hell is going on?” Arthur said for where he stood behind Merlin. There was a bowl of apples and on several apples were letters and when I put them together they spelt Morgana.” Merlin explained.
“I see and where are these apples?” Arthur asked and in reply Merlin glared at Gwaine. “I see.”
“But it was there and it defiantly said Morgana.” Merlin said.
“I believe you.” Arthur told him. “Whether everyone else will…well that’s a different matter.”

“You look troubled my dear.” Eldred said over breakfast.
“I’m fine.” Eirawen said forcing a smile. “Just, thinking.”
“Come, what is on your mind?” Eldred asked putting down his fork.
“It’s nothing my lord.”
“Eirawen please, call me Eldred.”
“Of course, I’m sorry Eldred.”
“It’s quite alright darling.” He said before turning back to his meal, Eirawen sighed quietly in relief, she couldn’t tell him, it was too risky. Just then a maid came forward with a tray. She took it over to Eldred who removed a letter from the silver and opened it. Eirawen watched curiously as his brow furrowed as he read the contents. “Something wrong Eldred?” She asked taking a sip of her drink and watching him over the rim of the goblet. He looked up and smiled at her. “Not really, I am afraid I have urgent business to attend to today so I am afraid the coronation will have to be postponed.”
“Oh, I see.” Eirawen couldn’t help but feel relieved.
“Umm why don’t you ride out today? Your maid can show you around. The kingdom is beautiful this time of year.” Eldred said Eirawen smiled.
“I think I will.” A whole day away for the castle with Lila sounded much better than being crowned Queen. “Will you excuse me?”
“Of course my dear, have a nice day.” Eldred said and she nodded before leaving the room.

Eirawen and Lila rode through the trees, the warm midday sun beating down on them, a slight breeze making their hair trail out behind them on the wind. Eirawen’s white stallion trotted along beside Lila’s chocolate brown mare as the horses picked their way through a drift of crocuses as swifts circled as swooped past them, so close you could reach out and touch them. Eirawen felt better than she had done in weeks, months, even years. She smiled and lifted her hand for the reins to run it over the leaves of the low canopy of trees above her. “The river is not far up ahead.” Lila said, “It’s a lovely place to bathe.”
“Race you!” Eirawen cried like a child before sending her horse into a canter. Soon the two girls were racing through the trees, the world rushing past them as they laughed and played. When they reached the river Eirawen’s horse skidded to a stop almost sending her flying off its back. The two girls dismounted and tied the reins to nearby trees before running down the bank to the water’s edge. Eirawen removed her clothes and stepped gingerly over the rocks and into the depths of the water. The water was cooling in the heat of the sun and she ran her hand over the surface and felt the smoothness of it, also as if it were silk. “Are you coming?” She asked Lila who was still stood on the side. Lila shook her head slightly. “Why? It’s wonderful.” Eirawen said lying back in the water, feeling it ripple through her hair. “I know, but…but it’s not my place M’lady-”
“Eirawen.” She reminded her. “Look come on! What’s the problem?” Eirawen said sitting back up. “Look its lovely.” She said splashing Lila who squealed and ran back. “See! Come on!”
“Ok.” She said turning and slowly letting her dress fall to the floor. Eirawen couldn’t stop the gasp escaping her lips as she saw the glazy stretched flesh on her back. “Oh.” She whispered as Lila hurried into the water avoiding eye contact. “What happened?” Eirawen whispered.
“When I was little, my parents, they died in a fire, my brother saved me but died for his injures.” Lila whispered quietly.
“I’m sorry.” Eirawen whispered.
“It’s ok; it was a long time ago.” Eirawen smiled sadly.
“Come on; let’s have some fun shall we?” She asked and Lila smiled.
“Yes, I would like that.”
“Come on then! Catch me if you can!” She called before swimming off downstream.

Gwaine, Leon, Percival and Elyan rode along as the sun made its steady way across the sky. “Do you actually know where we are going?” Percival asked.
“I thought you did!” Gwaine said and Percival sighed,
“Ok I am going that way as it looks like a path, you coming?” Percival said but Gwaine had seen something up ahead and had already ridden off. “Gwaine!? Gwaine!?” Percival yelled but Gwaine took no notice.
“Should we follow him?” Elyan asked but Percival shook his head.
“He probably just saw a squirrel or something, he will come back when he is hungry, come on.” Percival said before cantering off in the other direction closely followed by Elyan. Leon looked from where Gwaine went to where Percival and Elyan were ridding and sighed before turning and following Gwaine.

Soon Eirawen began to tire but she kept going, Lila wasn’t far behind and she was enjoying the feel of the water over her skin. Suddenly, without warning, she found herself in fast flowing deep rapids that swept her along against her will. She struggled helplessly desperately trying to keep her head above water as she found herself being pulled far away from Lila and even further from safety.
