Chapter 10 – Forgive and Forget

Gwaine stumbled along the long corridors of the castle trying to keep in a straight line. His mind was still aching with thoughts and memories of his ‘conversation’ with Eirawen. He hated himself for leaving her but then what could he have done? He had thought she was dead. But now she had Eldred, her savour and her prince charming and Gwaine hated him. He knew it was just complete green eyed jealously but he couldn’t help it.  Suddenly he heard a sound, sobbing. Someone was crying, a woman. He crept towards the sound before realising it came from Eirawen’s chambers. Slowly he slipped his head round the door to see the shape of Eirawen under the sheets, her body shaking with sobs. Gwaine thought about leaving but he couldn’t, he hated seeing her like this, it brought back memories of when Morgana had revealed the truth, that Eirawen wasn’t really Eirawen, she was just a normal girl stolen from her home. Ever so slowly Gwaine crept into the room and over to the bed. As he sat down she took a suddenly terrified inhale of breath and her body tensed. “It’s alright, what’s wrong?” Gwaine said lying beside her and placing a hand on her arm. She relaxed again recognising him but she stayed quite, unsure of what to say. “Come love, you can tell me. I have had enough mead to have forgotten it all by the morning anyway.” He said and the smallest flicker of a smile crossed her face.
“It’s nothing, I’m just being stupid.” She said. She knew she couldn’t tell him, Morgana will kill him and god knows what else.
“It must be a whole lot of nothing.” Gwaine said “Come on, I wont tell a soul, I promise.” Eirawen sighed; she was going to have to lie. “I-I just don’t think I am ready, ready to be a Queen.” She said silently praying for him to buy it.
“I see” Gwaine said thoughtfully. He didn’t know what to say and Eirawen knew this. Slowly she turned to face him.
“It’s ok, really. I just feel so alone sometimes.” She said as Gwaine wiped her eyes with his thumb.
“But you have Eldred.” He said and she shivered. “Are you cold?” She nodded hiding the fact she had shivered from fear. Gwaine smiled softly and removed his shirt and she wrapped it around her. “I’m sorry, about what I said earlier.” She whispered but Gwaine shushed her as he wrapped his arms tightly around her. “It doesn’t matter.”
“No, It was wrong and unfair, I’m sorry.” She whispered into his chest.
“It’s fine, it is forgotten and you are completely forgiven.” He said into her hair and Eirawen realised just how much she had missed him.

Merlin walked along the corridors in search of two things really, he had been told by Arthur to go and fetch the lady Adeline to see if she could tell them any useful information but he was also looking for Gwaine. Leon had told him about finding Eirawen’s maid and how Gwaine had gone off to find Eirawen. He had said Gwaine had returned alone but soon after he had passed Eirawen in the corridor. He had then explained that along with Percival and Elyan he had found Gwaine in the tavern in a foul mood before Gwaine had stormed off. Merlin, apart from being very confused was very worried.

Merlin knocked on the doors of Adeline’s chambers only for it to be answered by Cally. “Merlin. Hello.” She said smiling sweetly and Merlin found himself blushing. “Hi.” He said waving awkwardly before forcing himself to stop, he was being stupid.
“What can I do for you?” She asked causing several questions to jump into his mind the defiantly weren’t what Arthur had asked, he blushed again, embarrassed at his own thoughts. “Umm, Arthur was wondering if he could see the lady Adeline.” Merlin explained hurriedly. “I see, well I am afraid she is sleeping at the moment, I was just leaving.” Cally said.
“Oh, umm right, ok.” Merlin stuttered before she took his arm.
“Walk with me, it’s a lovely evening.” She said smiling.
“Yeh, umm sure.” Merlin said smiling nervously back before she led him off down the corridor.

“I’ve missed you.” Eirawen whispered was she felt the security of Gwaine’s arms wrap tighter around her.
“I missed you too.” Gwaine whispered back.
“I wish…” She trailed off. She wanted to say she wished she had married him not Eldred; she wanted to say she wished she wasn’t the Princess of Nilemah. She wanted to say she wished she could be his. But she couldn’t, that was unfair and it was stupid, so she stayed silent, burrowing her head into his chest.

Lila knew something was wrong, she had sensed it, she didn’t know what it was but she knew Eirawen was hiding something. She walked along the darkening corridors, a basket of laundry in her arms and thought back to the knight she had spoken to earlier, Sir Leon. She had see the sadness in his eyes, sensed his sorrow and worry. She knew those feelings only to well. She smiled slightly to herself as she remembered there conversation, she liked to think she had helped him, helped set his mind at rest a little.

She stopped at the end of the corridor and rested the basket on her hip as she opened to door to Eirawen’s chamber. She expected to find her mistress asleep, the candles out and the room still but instead the candles still flickered with light and the room was not still, nor was Eirawen asleep. Instead Lila found her wrapped in Gwaine’s arms, both of them half naked, kissing passionately on the bed. There was a loud thud as the basket fell from her arms as she stood there shocked. Eirawen and Gwaine pulled apart, their heads whipping in her direction. Eirawen blushed deep red. “Shhh Lila, please.” She whispered but it was too late. “What’s going on? We heard…oh.” Merlin said as he and Cally hurried into the room.
“What the hell is all this!?” A voice boomed and Eirawen felt her blood run cold. Eldred pushed though the small crowd by the door and his face became deep scarlet. “Guards! Arrest that man! Now!”
