Bang. I sat up. No, it couldn't be, not that, not here. I tried telling myself that I was just imaging things but as Sean rushed into the room, gun drawn; I knew that I was just fooling myself. Bang, the unmistakeable noise of a gun being fired yet again rang through the house and I knew they had come for me. Looking out the window as another gun was fired I saw several dark motionless bodies lying on the ground. As I watched transfixed all I could think was that it was all my fault, yet again people died because of me. Those lying dead or dying on the ground had families, loved ones that would never see them again.
A hand on my shoulder made me jerk back as Sean whispered urgently, "Come away from the window, it's not safe." I let him pull me away, too upset that it was happening yet again. I contemplated just going to them as I would be taken anyway, there could be no other result, and this way a lot less people would be hurt. As the thought flashed through my mind I smiled as hopefully this time they will be so angry that they would just kill me. It must have been written on my face as suddenly Sean gripped my upper arms and turned me to face him, shaking me as he did so. "You are not going out there. You are not going back there. I said I would keep you safe and I'll try my hardest so please don't try and make this any harder for me. Please just for this one night do as I ask."
"I can't, everyone dies because of me. Wouldn't it just be simpler if they finished off the job?" I yelled giving up trying to get free as a lone escaped tear rolled down my face.
"Ri, please don't think like that. They knew the risk when they signed up for the job."
Shaking my head, "You don't understand and you never will. You can't."
"Ri I might understand more than you think but for now please just stay behind me."
Something about the look he gave me, made me shut my mouth and nod.
"Thanks. Now we need to get out of this room it will be the first place they will head to."
Letting go of me, he turned and checked the hallway before gesturing for me to follow him which after brief hesitation I did. I obeyed his order of sticking close to his back, not liking how the fear quickly returned as if it were an old friend. Every sound was amplified as I waited for the footsteps that would signal the end. Moving down the hallway slowly, heading for the stairs when suddenly Sean stopped so abruptly that I almost ran into his broad back. Not hearing anything, I listened harder trying to distinguish what had put him on alert and then I heard it: swift footfalls moving rapidly towards us. Heartbeat rising, I didn't even register that Sean was trying to urge me into the opened doorway until his hand reached for my waist as he pushed me inside before silently shutting the door.
Gentle as he was the shock caused me to stumble and I would of face planted if it wasn't for his arm that was wrapped around my waist holding me up. Turning around from the carpet I looked up eyes widening at how close his face was to my mine. His finger rapidly went up to silence the words that were about to spill uncontrollably from my mouth, a successful manoeuvre as all I could think of was his finger as it lay against my parted lips. Standing up, pulling me with him as he did so. I glanced around the room we were currently in only to realise that I had never entered it before but the standardised furniture indicating its use as a guest room. The few articles of clothing draped over the bed and one of the chairs led to the discovery that it was also in use.
"Who..?" I asked quietly not wanting to be found despite what I said and felt.
"Mine, I'll just grab a couple of things."
As soon as he said it was his room I struggled to get free, uncomfortable to say the least. His arms immediately released me which I was grateful for and I quickly backed away.
