CHAPTER 32: THAT BRIGHT 'OLE FUTURE OF MINE
"We believe we have most of the company away after following the raid and uncovering others through money trails but there is bound to be some of them still out there. So it is a suggestion which I very much believe is the best option that you go into witness protection, start a brand new life with a new identity. Now you are above the age of consent now so we do not have too involve your parents in this if they were here," David spat out angrily as he had just found out how loving my parents were. "I know it may be very hard to leave but it's a decision that you cannot take back: you will never be able contact them or anyone else ever again-"
"I stopped seeing them as parents a long time ago but...what about Sean? Can I still see him?" I asked hesitatingly looking at Sean's outline through the frosted glass.
"Katherine..." David sighed heavily.
"No listen. I heard you speaking before when you thought I was sleeping and then after..." I blushed and shook the memories out of my head for the time being. "Is there any way we can do it together? I don't want to start a new life like this: if it means that I have to be alone again, being in danger and having someone you love is the choice I would choose every time."
I was resolute in my decision ever since Sean and I had talked it through and I realised that he wasn't going to leave. Running would only put him and me in danger.
"I can see how much you care for each other and so if he agrees then we could apply for two new identities-"
In my excitement I flung my arms around his shoulders, only to freeze when I realised what I had done. He hugged me back gently and I felt like a small pup encased in his arms. I relaxed knowing that I could trust in him because of Sean and thanked him.
"I'll try and push it through as quickly as possible hun. You be good to Sean now he's like a son to me but also tell me if he misbehaves and I'll have a word with him," David said seriously before knocking the end of my nose lightly with his fore finger.
I shook my head at him, smiling as I lay back down, my slinged arm starting to throb.
"Will do David," I said saluting in jest with my other arm.
"Alright, no need to make fun now I'm just an old man."
"Old man my ass," I replied chuckling at his attempt at looking affronted but he soon joined in laughing deeply.
I sipped at the coffee he had brought, cradling it in my cold hands. The place he had brought me to after the hospital only had two rooms and lacked central heating. It was a rundown place, the windows boarded up and seemingly abandoned when in actuality there were cameras everywhere to spot any potential attackers.
"You'll stay here for a couple of days at least so get comfy, I'll try and speed things along but there's plenty of food for a while and there are fiction books on the shelf in the main room if you get bored. Get one of the men to phone me if you need anything and I'll try and sort it."
"Thanks David."
"No problem, now I must get going, I'll talk to Sean and then get things rolling. Stay safe."
He whispered the last bit kissing the top of my head and I couldn't help but feel like Sean had: taken under his wing.
He left soon after and I waited, biting my finger nails whilst he spoke in hushed tones to Sean. My leg tapped uncontrollably as both outlines were so blurred that I couldn't even hope to guess how the conversation was going. They hugged, thumping each other on their backs, before the broader but shorter man left and the other: Sean knocked on the door. Scrambling off the bed I had been sitting on the edge of I ripped open the door to meet a straight faced Sean. I gestured for him to come in, unsure if I was able to speak the words. He shut the door behind him and looked at my arm.
