Chapter 01: The Avergers

The SHIELD helicopter was flying over New York City. SHIELD, or Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, is an extra-governmental, military counter-terrorism and intelligence agency. Their main principle was to protect the Earth. Nick Fury was in the bridge of the helicarrier when Agent Phil Coulson had information for him.

"Director Fury, we have some news about this man crossing time." Said Agent Coulson as he handed Fury a tablet with various photos of a man in his early thirties wearing a suit in various parts of the world and seemingly taken at different times.

"April 1912 shortly before the departure of the Titanic, November 22, 1963 in the public during the assassination of President Kennedy, and finally in November 9, 1989 when the Berlin Wall fell. It is really in all times. Can you find out where he is right now?" Fury asked, tilting his head toward Coulson.

"I'll see what we can do." Coulson replied before leaving the office they had just entered.

Fury sat down at his desk and pulled a file from one of his drawers. He placed it on his desk and stared at the front of it. The Avengers initiative.

After a short time, Phil Coulson returned to Fury's office. He looked down at the file, then back at Fury before handing him the tablet.

"This is the enhanced image. It appears to be a human running." He explained.

"Do we have his name or any other information on him other than the pictures?" Fury asked.

"Yes. According to some accounts, he goes by the name Hayden. No last name or anything. He is currently in a coffee shop in New York City near Stark Tower." Coulson explained as Fury nodded to him. "I notice you took the initiative on the file. Would you like me to go recruit him?"

"That will not be necessary. I will visit him myself. Have him followed, I want to have his location in real time so I know where to find him if he moves, by the time I get there."

A few hours later, Hayden in the photos was still drinking coffee while playing a game on his cell phone when Nick Fury took the seat across from him at the same table.

"I was wondering when you were going to come." He said, slightly surprising Fury.

"How did you know I was coming?" Fury asked now more suspicious.

"There's a guy who's been watching me for an hour. And since he didn't try to accost me or offer me a cup of coffee, I doubt he had a crush on me. So he was either watching me until someone came along, or he was planning to follow me to mug me." Explained Hayden. "If not can you tell me who you are?"

"Nick Fury, Director of SHIELD." Introduced the man with the eye patch. "You look pretty young for someone who was on the Titanic when it left."

"How about instead of dropping a bomb to throw me off, you tell me why you're here?" Hayden asked, unperturbed by what Fury was telling him.

"Very well... a short time ago, someone not from this world broke into the SHIELD facility in New York to try to steal the Tesseract." Explained the S.H.I.E.L.D. director, as Hayden looked intrigued. "He has since brainwashed two of the sharpest people I know and turned them into his personal flying monkeys. At SHIELD, we think you might be able to help us. Since you are obviously not from this world your skills could be useful to us. Do you agree?"

"Why do you need me? In your eyes I've certainly been through history, but that doesn't make me someone who could help with this." Hayden asked, becoming suspicious.

"The Avengers Initiative is a project to bring together a group of remarkable people, in the hopes that they can become something greater. You could be among the most powerful heroes on Earth." He said, trying to convince his interlocutor who took a sip of his coffee.
