It had been three months since Theous started therapy and Nonny had been nothing but the greatest support he could ever ask for. Even his coach and his teammates had been very support even though they teased him as often as they could.
Truth be told, it wasn't easy coming here to this serene rehab like he was a drug addict and he had resisted a couple of times. Even though he had packed his bag several times, planning to leave, the sight of the pregnant Nonny and the thought of the babies made him want to get better. He wanted and planned to be in Nonny's life for as long as possible and she had made it clear that she wasn't getting back together until he got the help he needed.
Present she was as his support system but for now, she was just somebody close to him, not his woman as were the conditions.
He did not understand why she was hesitant when he had become the bigger man to father children he never made. To him, he felt like he was the one that was supposed to be setting terms and conditions, not the other way round but because he held Nonny dear, he knew that he would even donate her a kidney or his heart.
Smiling at the thought, Theous looked up as the psychologist he had been working with came in.
She was a beautiful woman inside and outside, truth be told. With long curly black hair and a body that was evident it worked out, the woman was a man's wet dream and his lifelong dream woman. She held herself with an air of class, respect and sophistication.
She gently smiled as she sat down before Theous, acknowledging him.
"Dr. Evie," he said as he looked at her.
The woman had stripped him naked mentally and for the first time in a long time, he felt like he had lifted a burden off his conscience. They had talked about almost everything including the fiancee and their baby, how he lied to his family about going to school while he was homeless and trying to become a soccer star and about Nonny.
"That smile tells me you are thinking about her," Dr. Evie said with a slight grin. "I'm listening."
Theous chuckled slightly. "She called last night. The babies are growing and Dr. Moyo put her on bed rest even though she insists on coming to see me before I leave the rehab next week."
"Sounds wonderful to me, Theous. Anyway...you promised me that today we'd talk about...Bruckfall?"
Theous immediately tensed, instantly becoming stiff.
"Bruckfall is that place downtown where all the homeless people have their squatter camp, right? I want you to tell me more about that part of your life. I feel like you left something out. Do you mind?"
"I dont want to talk about Bruckfall."
That had been a dark time. He had done some regrettable things all in the name of survival. It was a wonder that nobody from his past at Bruckfall had surfaced yet since he became rich and known.
Dr. Evie nodded. "I won't force it but just know that you can talk to me about it whenever you want. Anyway, you've talked about everything you could and I think we're almost at the bottom of your PTSD. I believe that Emily has helped you with your scratching habit? If you dont mind, can I please have a look?"
Theous took off his shirt, his beautiful but scarred body on display. Ever since he had become vulnerable with Nonny, he didn't really care about anyone else seeing him topless.
Dr. Evie walked over and started inspecting his scars, smiling at him as her hands traced the scars, making Theous a bit uncomfortable.
"It looks like you're healing quite well. This means almost everything is coming together."
Her hands ran over one particularly large scar on his breast and Theous felt like her hand was lingering a second too long. Was he overthinking things? He watched her beautifully manicured hand resting on the scar and he glanced at her with questions on his face, clearing his throat.
"Don't worry. I'm just thinking really hard about the secret you won't let out. My apologies if I'm making you uncomfortable." The woman removed her hand from his breast. "You're in good shape both mentally and physically but you're like an almost complete puzzle with one missing piece. And you won't let me find that piece."
Theous put his shirt back on and sat down, barely saying a word to the Dr for the remainder of his session up to the point where she cut it short.
"Like I said earlier, whenever you're ready to talk, feel free to reach out whether you're here or back home."
Theous simply nodded and then he left.
As he sat in his room in the evening, he held Dr. Evie's card in his hands, contemplating whether to call her or not.
He was not proud of the things he had done in Bruckfall but it was the one thing eating him up inside and he knew it would break Nonny to know that even though he had given her a hard time with her pregnancy, he had done something worse. It was not murder or crime but it was as bad as it could get.
He picked up the phone and dialled Dr. Evie.
Meanwhile at Dr. Moyo's office, Nonny sat in a plush chair, waiting for the doctor with the results of her blood work.
Earlier today, she had passed out in the street and knowing that she was getting closer to her last month, she was getting nervous.
As she looked at the open file cabinet that was alphabetically labelled, her eye caught a particular file that was sticking out from the rest, looking like Dr. Moyo had gone through it recently.
Curious, she walked over and pulled out the file then opened it.
Almost immediately, she wished she hadn't.
Because it was her folder.
Her eyes went wide as she read through the documents and by the end, she could barely stand, leaning against the wall for support.
The door opened and Dr. Moyo came in with a smile which dropped as soon as he saw the file in Nonny's hands.
"How long have you known?" she whispered with her eyes closed, trying not to get emotional.
"Since you chose that particular donor."
"But his file said he was Jamaican."
"He lied. Even when he came to donate, his accent did not match. He was just a poor young man trying to survive so he donated for some money. I promised him I wouldn't tell anyone and...now you went and found out."
Nonny opened her eyes, looking hurt. "Does he know? Does he know that he is my sperm donor?"
"No. We had decommissioned his frozen sperm and destroyed it after he donated some money to us but he had asked that I leave a vial just in case things dont go as planned in the future. Unfortunately...that was the vial we used on you."
Nonny felt faint.
Just when she thought things were coming together.
