We eventually went back to Remington's house with his brothers as we worked on our own projects for Sumerian Records. I had some songs I had written that I thought were perfect to pitch to the label, but then I remembered that I was expected to sing one of my own songs live. The thought of it terrifies me more than anything, and I wasn't sure if I'd ever be up to the task. I knew I had to try, though, understanding that this would help my songwriting career grow better and I could make something great out of this. Whatever happened, I would still continue to write real and wholesome lyrics for singers who hoped to express themselves a little better. An idea I had to get myself brave enough to perform one of my songs was asking the boys to teach me how to play the guitar since they each knew a little bit with Sebastian being the most experienced with it. It took longer than I wanted it to, but they were patient enough as they helped me master the basics and then I was able to play one verse of a song I've written which was a huge accomplishment for me.

Things shifted suddenly in the beginning of October when Emerson got a call from a hospital in Paris and was told that Nina had gone into labor and has checked in. I knew immediately that he was on his way to join his wife and be by her side as she waits for her baby to arrive, and I had already invited myself to join him since she's basically my sister at this point in our lives. We took the earliest flight to France that would get us there faster and while on the plane, Em was clearly scared for his wife, but I reassured him that despite her demeanor, Nina is one of the strongest women I've ever known and she knows without a doubt that she can do this and that she'd have him to be there for her. He felt a little calmer and we hailed a cab to the hospital as soon as we landed. The drive felt like it took forever even though it was only less than a mile away from the airport. After paying the cab driver and exiting the car, we rushed inside the hospital and in French, Emerson asked where Nina Barrett-Moon was before they directed us.

When we found her in one of the hospital rooms, she was beginning to look worn out and exhausted from however long she's been here. But once she caught sight of us, the sweetest smile lit up on her face as she looked so happy to see two people she loved most in the world be here to help her get through this. We went over to hug her and Emerson planted a soft kiss on her lips expressing with glee in his tone, "I'm so happy, my Moon child. You're literally the brightest star within my grasp. I love you so much." She giggled and kissed his cheek as she replied with, "Thank you, Em. I love you." She turned to me then and hugged me tightly as she stated, "Carina, it means so much that you came all this way to be here for me. I've always been so grateful to have you in my life." I smiled back at her and told her, "There's nothing I wouldn't do for my best friend and soon-to-be sister-in-law." We both laughed at that before she stopped and groaned in pain and discomfort. I knew before the nurses and doctors came in and kicked me and Emerson out that it meant Nina was about to give birth as of now.

Sitting in the waiting room, we waited what must have been over 12 hours for any update on Nina and her baby. Near that last hour, I asked Emerson, "Are you hoping for a girl or a boy?" He turned to me and shook his head before explaining, "Gender doesn't matter to me. That's my child made from the woman I love most in this wretched world and I will spend my mortal years filling my kid's days with beauty, ideas, and the freedom to let themselves grow into what they were meant to be instead of what I want them to be." I smiled and patted his shoulder as I appreciated his answer to my question. A doctor had finally stood in front of us and asked if we were the family of Nina. He told us that the delivery was a success and that Nina had given birth to a healthy boy. I squealed in excitement to hear the good news as Em smiled and silently nodded to the doctor. He told us that she was resting now and that we could go see her and the baby now.

We went back up to the room where Nina was still on her hospital bed but actually sitting up this time while holding a small blanketed bundle in her arms. I silently walked closer so that I could see the baby's face and true enough, he had his mother's lovely blonde hair with his father's gentle features. I cried with joy to see such a beautiful creation of a human being existing in the arms of one of the most gentle souls I've ever met. Emerson had joined Nina by her side as he gently wrapped an arm around her and kissed the side of her head. He then smiled at his son sleeping so peacefully in his mother's arms and blew a sweet kiss at him. After wiping my tears away, I whispered to them both, "Congratulations, you two. He's so lucky to have people like you as his parents. You're gonna be great." They both smiled at me with gratitude before I asked, "Do you know what you'll name him?" Nina nodded and gently brushed her finger across her newborn's cheek before answering my question, "Oliver."
