It all started with a single expedition. They were being sent far from the kingdom, way into the dark forests, a high-risk zone for those without good weaponry. They chatted happily along the balloon ride, both bragging about the monsters they would defeat..
And yet, neither could ever predict what would happen on that journey. It was as if the gods above hated them, striking them with bad luck.
First, the balloon almost went down, just before Mala Sauce successfully lit the flame, saving their lives by a mere string.
They were wrong to ease down.
…….
It was when they arrived did things go completely wrong. Milk and Yam both got separated from their group completely, lost and simply holding hands to stay close. Both of them yelled, but it was to no avail. They called out for their teammates, praying to someone above that they would hear their voices.
Yam couldn't even process how much it hurt to see his lover's terror. The fear swimming in his pale blue eyes was enough to sting his heart.
Yet, he never even noticed it; He assumed it was merely the stress of being alone.
That was his greatest mistake of all, pushing off his boyfriend's fear for their safety.
Their trip dragged by slowly, and all they wanted was to return to their group- No, their friends.
Yam refused to admit that he saw them so closely, but he began to view them as..Some kind of siblings.
Grumbling, he clutched his mace harder, the other hand being held by Milk.
He could hear Milk's breathing speeding up, panic setting in; It was silent.
Far too silent.
..Especially for a forest known for hauntings caused by the angry dead souls from below.
He squeezed the other's hand, an attempt at comfort. His boyfriend always got stressed during moments of deafening silence. Milk stayed quiet, his breaths still quick and shaky.
..Divines, he would always regret not turning somewhere else. Not directing his lover to another clearing, where mangled parts of a destroyed beast lay in the dirt, a ruby red eye glowing up at them.
When it slowly assembled itself, he was horrified.
Yam wanted to turn and run, lift his boyfriend up and make a sprint in the opposite direction, but his knees stayed locked into place, boots dug into the dirt.
The stone creature growled at them, howling out a deafening noise in anger.
If he could travel back in time, he would; He would do anything to stop Milk from grabbing out his staff and attacking.
..Because in the mere blink of an eye, Milk was down on the floor, blood pouring from his head, staining his heavenly white hair. His usual robe was covered in blood and dirt, yet he still kept going; He wished that the man wasn't such a fighter.
