Everywhere they looked they could see tall green trees, beautiful flowers, and as a bonus, there was a big flowing creek dividing the park. The tree tops were close together so they created a canopy. The air smelled like a rainstorm just passed by and birds were flying about. In front of them, a mountain Formed a cave that had a wooden opening.

"This is the shaft." Teague said."

Teague, do you see any of the science people, news people, or miners? Are you sure we're at the right place?" Haley asked, stepping back.

"This is a different entrance, the cave is down below. See the rock? This is an igneous rock. It came from this mountain which is not really a mountain." Teague said.

"It's a VOLCANO!" Maverick said, patting the magma rock.

"That mountain...err...volcano erupted when?" Haley asked with horror.

"Twenty seven years ago. The volcano erupted twice. The first time it never reached Anywhere near the shaft, but the second time, it exploded and reached here and all the way, over there." Lilly said, pointing to a dark patch about eight feet away from them.

"Ok, ok, I get it now can we please just go in? I feel like I'm doing P.E. outside while listening to science class." Haley whined, plopping down on the floor. Soon the four of them were ready to walk inside the dark, cool, mining cave.

There was a long awkward silence until Maverick stopped and the others bumped into each other. "Goodness, Maverick would you-" Haley couldn't finish speaking.

Maverick slapped his hand over her mouth and in a very faint whisper he said "Haley! Shh shh shh! We've come to a cliff! The shaft goes deeper or over there where the miners mine for coal. You can see Lilly's parents and their team of workers investigating that giant rock."

They all looked over Maverick's shoulder and sure enough, they saw Lilly's parents and 10 other people. They were wearing blue jeans, puffy coats, and extra safety gear. They had set up white sheets everywhere, and they had lights and scientific equipment on a table.

"How did they get down there?" Lilly asked in a whisper so soft that almost nobody could hear it.

"I don't know, but what I do know is that there is about a six-hundred foot drop. It's a ravine!" Teague answered.

"Guys! Come look! They made a staircase and it leads down to the labrine!" Haley said, pointing to a well-hidden door.

"Labrine? What's that?" Teague and Maverick asked in confusion.

"A lab that's in a ravine, labrine." Haley said, opening and closing her hands like a book. They laughed and walked over to Haley. "Come. If we can get down there we could wander around and look at the rocks!" Haley said as they walked down the stairs.

"Look, the stairs are made out of mica," Maverick said, pointing to a black set of stairs.

"Woah! Cool!" Lilly said.

"Guys...Let's keep moving shall we?" Haley said, getting annoyed.

"We're going, we're going!" Lilly said. They went down and down the mica stairs. Soon they could hear voices.

"We need to hide. If they see Lilly, she will be grounded!" Teague said, grabbing ahold of Maverick and Lilly. There were little indentations in the walls but they couldn't fit in them so they just flattened themselves against the wall and listened.

"Mr. Cheuett! Do you have the files I asked you For, I need them right away!" A lady said with a Hispanic accent. There was a lot of running around and movement that couldn't be heard at the top of the stairs.

"Mrs. Trent! We think that the rocks are Jadeite! We'll be R-I-C-H, richie rich!" A man sang "Did he just say Jadeite?!" Lilly asked in a very soft whisper.

"Lilly! Jadeite! We did our science project on it in 3rd grade, remember?" Teague whispered to Lilly.

"That's right! You had a section about what it's worth! I think it was three million dollars per carat?" Haley said her voice becoming louder.

"Haley shh shh!" Maverick said, looking over at Haley.

"What was that?!" A voice said and a lady whipped around looking for the sounds she heard. Lilly, Maverick, Teague, And Haley all stood against the dark, cold, hard wall, not breathing, not moving, not talking, not even blinking.

"It was probably just the wind..." They heard a man say.

"Antonio, you really think that we would be able to hear the wind from down here? Honestly. Now get moving, we have Jadeite to mine and money to make!" The lady said.

"I'm hungry..." Haley complained.

"Here's a bar. Now let's go and look around." Maverick said, tossing Haley a granola bar. They sneaked around the back part of the ravine and entered another part of the ravine. It was getting darker as they twisted and turned through the ravine. They were slowly moving downhill. It was no longer nice and cool, the temperature had risen about 50 degrees. Then they heard a Teague grunt.
