Now they had been walking for about 3 hours complaining about being hungry and laughing about their little adventure. Just then Lilly stopped them and pointed to an open area.
"Look," Lilly said. The entire area that they were in was surrounded by rocks and mushrooms covered with bioluminescence.
"Woah," Teague said, looking around. The cave was beautiful. Crystals, stones, and water pools lit up by the bioluminescence rocks. The top of the cave had little fluorescent specks which made it look like stars in a night sky.
"I need to post this on my channel! This is beautiful" Lilly said with amazement."
"It's not beautiful, it's breathtaking!" Haley said with a giggle. "Aww... look, Maverick has fallen asleep!"
"I think I'll catch some z's as well." Lilly said with a yawn. Lilly was just about to sit on a red and black rock when Haley grabbed her arm and yanked her back.
"What did you do that for!?" Lilly asked, annoyed.
"Lilly! That's a Cinnabar stone!!" Haley was pointing at the hideous red and black rusty rock.
"So?" Lilly said, trying to escape Haley's hard grasp.
"Tsk, Cinnabar is a stone that's made up of mercury sulfur or the chemical formula HgS, which makes it highly toxic and one of the deadliest rocks ever!" Haley explained.
"Well, I'm surprised that none of those words make any sense." Lilly said, rubbing her head.
"Oh boy." Lilly sat down, just not on the Cinnabar.
"Ok, mercury is a very bad chemical, and it becomes a liquid at room temperature. Mercury is used in thermometers. Now sulfur is less toxic than mercury, but sometimes mild burning, tingling, and stinging can be its side effects if you manage to get in contact with it."
Haley stopped talking and realized that Lilly was not paying attention. "Lilly!" Haley snapped.
"Sorry...I'm just so... tired." Lilly said groggily."
"Oh never mind what I said, let's just go to sleep." Haley said, laying down. However, Lilly was leaning against a part of the Cinnabar and some dust from it rubbed off onto her jacket. Lilly didn't know this because she was too tired, she took off her jacket and lay on the floor. And with that, she inhaled the cinnabar dust. The next morning Maverick and Teague were up exploring the luminous cave.
"Haley! Lilly! Wake up, let's go explore the cave!" Maverick said quietly, shaking Lilly and Haley awake.
"What...is...it?" Haley asked, trying to get rid of Maverick.
"Get up." Teague said.
"Never wake me up again." Haley snapped. Suddenly they felt a cool breeze that was coming from cracks in the ceiling.
"Air!" Teague yelled, jumping up and down.
"Guys! Look! You can see little bits of light up there!" Haley exclaimed. "If we can get up there, we might be able to get out of the cave."
"It's 7 am. We have plenty of time. Maverick said, looking at his phone.
"Lilly! We think we have a way out!" Teague said, bending down to shake Lilly awake.
"Oh no. Lilly fell asleep and inhaled Cinnabar dust! How could I let her! Ugh!" Haley was taking the jacket away from Lilly.
"So she fell asleep on Cinnabar, what's the damage?" Maverick asked, dusting off his own jacket.
"Brain damage, mild burns, stings, rashes, and so on and so on!" Haley said, bending down.
"Oh." Teague whispered.
"Lilly is unconscious, she won't be able to do anything for the next 10 to 15 hours!" Haley said, holding Lilly's hand.
"You stay with Lilly and I guess we'll find a way to get out, ok?'' Maverick said, opening his coat pocket.
"Yeah, good idea." Haley said. Maverick was able to get a rock and grind it to be sharp all around, he braided 3 mushroom stems together, and then he used the drawstrings from his jacket to tie everything together creating an ax.
Meanwhile, Teague was throwing pebbles at the ceiling trying to open up the cracks in the rocks. "Teague! I have an ax that will make a great pickaxe!" Maverick exclaimed, running over to Teague.
"That's cool, but look what I've been doing!" Teague said, stepping aside revealing a pile of rocks.
"That's great, Teague." Maverick said, handing his handmade pickaxe to Teague.
"Let's see how well this thing works." Teague said. Teague threw the pickaxe at one of the stones he had broken loose. Nothing. He threw it again. Nothing. For an hour they were throwing rocks and the ax at the ceiling trying to open the ceiling. "This is the last one." Teague said, aiming for a crack. He aimed, stepped back, and then launched the broken ax and heavy rock at the ceiling.
There was a little shaking and then half of the ceiling toppled down. "Haley! Move!" Teague yelled. Haley looked up and saw a bunch of rocks toppling toward her.
"You guys, seriously!?" Haley yelled as she was quickly gathering her stuff and trying to get Lilly out of the way.
"Haley you have like 5 seconds til' the boulder smashes Lily's foot!" Maverick yelled. Haley jerked Lilly up but the boulder ran over her foot instead.
"Haley!" Maverick yelled as the rest of the rocks ran over her ankle.
When the catastrophe was over, Maverick and Teague navigated themselves to Haley who was laying on the ground with a bloody ankle. Maverick took Haley's stuff and layed Lilly on the ground.
