The rest of the day was without excitement. We spent most of the time cleaning up the barricade. I kept thinking about what Jehan had said. What would my father do or say if I went to visit him? I had watched the people keeping watch on the tavern all day. I knew Grantaire's shift ended in 20 minutes. If something happened, I could surely convince him to let me go in. I just needed Courfeyrac to leave as there would be no chance he would disobey Enjolras's orders or let me inside for my own safety. A minute or two later, Courfeyrac left to use the bathroom or do who knows what. I strolled on over to Grantaire with a friendly smile.
"Hey, Grant!" He smiled and waved back.
"What's up, Elaine? How can I help you?" I pretended to think for a moment.
"Enjolras asked if I could make a flag for the barricade and I left the thread upstairs. Enjolras had the door shut and I was wondering if you could go get it for me? I figured it would probably be safer considering you know him better." Grantaire gave me a small, sympathetic smirk.
"I'm sorry, Elaine, but Courfeyrac left to use the bathroom and someone has to watch your-er, I mean watch the inspector." I widened my eyes and frowned.
"Please, Grantaire. I'll wait here and make sure no one goes in, I promise." He sighed.
"Alright, Elaine. I'll be right back," he said. I thanked him and waited for him to walk away. I didn't have much time, so as soon as he was out of my sight, I headed into the tavern.
My father looked up when I walked in. He had blood hardened on his forehead and tired eyes. A small part of me felt bad.
"Elaine," he whispered, his voice gravelly and quiet. "How could you do this to me?" I winced. I couldn't decide if he was right or not. While he had treated me poorly, I was still his daughter and I had sentenced him to be a prisoner until this was all over.
"No I didn't. You chose to be a jerk to all of those innocent boys. A traitor."
"I wasn't a jerk. I'm on the right side, the side of the law. Technically, you betrayed me. I mean, what daughter lets her father get captured?" he asked.
"Stop," I commanded. "You don't get to do that to me after everything you've done."
"I haven't done anything. You've chosen the wrong side. You're just a burden no matter where you go. Like those boys actually like having you around!"
"Shut up!" I cried.
"You realize you've sentenced me to death. If I die before this revolution falls and the army can get me out of this god forsaken tavern, this is your fault. My blood is on your hands!"
"Elaine!" another voice cut in. I spun around to the door where Enjolras was standing with his arms crossed and an angry look on his face. Grantaire was standing behind him, looking guiltily at the scene. "Let's go," Enjolras commanded.
"But-" I protested.
"Let's go."
I walked towards them. When I reached Enjolras, he grabbed my arm and dragged me towards the cafe and up the stairs to the empty meeting room. He sat down and pointed to the chair across from him. I sat and Grantaire stood behind Enjolras and mouthed a 'sorry'.
"Elaine, what were you thinking!"
"I-"
"I don't want to hear it. What do you think I thought when Grantaire came upstairs rambling on about something related to you making a flag? I don't know." He turned around to look at Grantaire. "Don't think you're off the hook either. You left your post and I'll give the same spiel to Courfeyrac once he gets back from the freaking bathroom." I smirked, enjoying their banter, but failing to wipe it off my face before Enjolras spun back around and noticed. "And you, get that smirk off your face. I didn't know what had happened. If you were running away or trying to break Javert out or-"
"So you don't trust me?" I cut in. Enjolras looked up with confused eyes. "You really think I would break that jerk out?"
"Well, he is your father and in that moment of panic, I thought the worst," he tried to explain.
"Just shut up," I muttered, standing up. "You're just as bad as him. I'm sick and tired of all these people hurting me and manipulating me and not trusting me. I'm done."
"Elaine, wait!" Enjolras exclaimed, reaching out to grab my arm. "Can we just talk?" I hesitated, looking at Grantaire, who mouthed 'please.' I took in Enjolras's hurt eyes and figured that the least I could do is return Grantaire's favor. I sat back down and Enjolras released his breath. "Look, I'm sorry. I promise you, I'm not like your father. I do trust you. And, I care about you. That's why I freaked out. I was panicking and I feared the worst; that I would lose someone I care about. I was worried you had succumbed to your father's manipulation. Please, Elaine. I'm sorry. I overreacted, but what you did put a lot of people at risk if somehow Javert got out."
"I'm sorry, too. I shouldn't have been selfish. I guess....I don't know. I guess I just wanted to see if my father was truly a bad person. I guess I was hoping he wasn't as bad as I thought and things could go back to normal," I explained.
"What can I do to make you trust me again?" Enjolras asked. I didn't even have to think.
"Let me fight and take my place at the barricade."
