*5 Years Later*
We were sharing a birthday again. Not that I was unhappy about this; I loved sharing my birthday with my niece. She was born a week after my birthday. Yep, that's right. Look out world, I have a niece. Her name was Eponine Grace Pontmercy and she was turning two years old today. While she was named after her father's late friend, we mostly called her Grace. Three years after their marriage, Grace had been born. I was still living with Cosette and Marius, and things couldn't be better. Cosette was a caring and compassionate mother and Marius was a great father. He was funny and great with the baby. I was honored when I was asked to be her aunt.
Sure, there were hardships at times, but that was a given considering what we had gone through. Shortly after their marriage, we moved into a quaint, humble house where there would be enough room for them to have a family. While they love Grace unconditionally, they had spoken about having another child in a few years. They were hoping for a boy so they could name it John, after our late father.
Yes, that's right. I consider Valjean my father. He was a father to us all. I am aware I called him Dad for the first and only time that night. I wanted him to hear it.
Sure, that day every year was hard. The anniversary of everyone's deaths. But, it made us realize how lucky we were to come out of this together and be able to live out our lives. Besides, we just hoped we would see them one day again, many years from now.
That brings us to today. I'm sitting at the dinner table, surrounded by Grace, Marius, Cosette, and a cake with bright candles. Behind them are some of the friends we've made over the years from living here.
"Happy birthday dear Grace and Laney, happy birthday to you!" they chorused. I go to blow out the candles, but Marius stops me.
"Make a wish, Elaine."
I close my eyes, thinking about the past five years, everything flashing through my mind in a blur. I never ended up making a wish that night. I didn't need to. I had everything I needed right in front of me.
