for months, they've advanced. the streets are crawling with monsoons and triple threats.
since we live in the upper city, i haven't been too worried. gangs know better than to mess around in the neighborhoods with rich people.
it's where the police department is and where city hall is.
today was a normal day, it's the afternoon and i'm going to pick up syoaran and blossom from school.
it's beginning to feel like fall since the year started and now everyone wearing sweaters and scarves.
it's all great, i love the scents, the clothes, everything. but the kids don't think so. eh, i don't care what they think.
little punks.
i get to the front gates of the school and scan the crowds of uniformed teenagers walking together. i step to the side and watch, trying to spot blossom and syoaran.
the crowd gets smaller and smaller until the grounds are near quiet besides the sound of cars driving.
i look and see no ones leaving the school anymore. no one in the courtyard or hanging around the entrance doors.
i groan to myself. i told them to call me if they'd hang back after school so they wouldn't worry us.
i assume they're waiting for each other to get out of the bathroom or something and wait around for a couple more minutes.
a couple more minutes turns to twenty minutes and then half an hour. irritated, i walk into the courtyard and into the school.
at the main office was a secretary woman organizing her desk, i imagine because she's going home.
"hi, ma'am. i'm here for my kids. i was here waiting for them but i didn't see them walk out. do you know if they have some after school thing goin on here?" i asked as politely as i could.
"oh, hi. uhm, not that i know of. but what's your kids name?" she asked.
"it's syaoran and blossom sato." i answered.
"okay, what grade are they in? are they in junior high or high school?"
"high school. their second year."
she pulls out a binder that has a level on it and starts to flip through until she finds my kids' names.
"uhh.. no, i see their schedules, they shouldn't have anything after school. are they in any sports or music extracurriculars?" she asked.
"no, not exactly. uhm.." i glance around the office trying to think of where they could be. when a teacher knocked on the open door.
i know him. he's the kids nerdy homeroom teacher. tall, skinny but the kids say he's really smart. we met him at orientation.
"hi, you must be mrs. sato. i'm mr. hamada, syaoran and blossom's science teacher, remember?" he greeted.
"hi, nice to see you again. uh, actually now that you're here, do you know if the kids are here somewhere? i waited around to walk home with them but i haven't seen them."
"oh, yeah, i saw them earlier. they're in the school, i'm just not sure where." he said.
"by themselves?" i ask.
