it was soon two a.m. and everyone went home for the night.
i was cleaning up the kitchen with asami while korra was putting the kids to bed.
"how's syaoran? i hope all the boyfriend stuff didn't ruin his day." asami asked me as we washed dishes together.
i washed up and she dried them before putting them away in the cupboards.
"i hope it didn't. i felt bad we couldn't do more for him." i admitted.
"what? he had two birthday dinners with more sugar than he knows what to do with." asami laughs.
i chuckled quietly. i was reminded of the other night when he told me he thought we'd forget.
"what?" asami asks. i look up and she has that face.
i shrugged, trying not to say anything. "come on, what's on your mind?"
"uhm.. it's nothing, but the last night, when i took him and his friends to eat, he told me that he thought we would forget about his birthday." i said.
her smile dropped and she looked so sad all of a sudden. "what?"
"yeah. his birthday slipped my mind a couple weeks back and it didn't hit me until he said that. i wanted to make sure he wasn't worried about anything today. but then we invited minoru and that was a whole thing.."
"oh god, i feel terrible. we never should have invited him." asami sighed.
"i know. also.. maybe we should start paying more attention to him. we have been preoccupied with blossom and yasuko that he's starting to feel forgotten." i said.
korra walks back in as we were talking.
"hey, you two, okay?" she asks.
i nodded and asami muttered something else before korra embraced her and kissed her cheek.
"we gotta do something else for sho. his birthday sucked." she said quietly.
i finished up the last plate before washing my hands and drying them with a towel.
"we were talking about something syaoran said to me yesterday. he thought we forgot about him. thought we would do anything for his birthday." i told her.
"what? we would never-"
i shrugged. "we have been busy. not enough to forget he exists but definitely enough to forget to plan his birthday party."
she sighs in frustration. "does he still feel that way?"
i shrugged. "i don't know. i haven't really talked to him since yesterday."
asami looks up at her and holds her hand. "we were saying how we might wanna give him another little birthday dinner? just us, so he's the center of attention and not a guy we've known a couple hours."
korra laughs softly and nods. "sure." she looks to me.
"what else do we do?" she asks. i shrugged.
"i dunno!"
"you have siblings." she said in a obvious tone.
"so? i didn't have parents that treated my brothers better than they did me." i laughed.
asami chuckled quietly. "we can figure out something tomorrow. let's just go to bed, i'm exhausted."
we turned off all the lights and went to bed.
