CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Kizzie stayed with Ada for another day.
Tommy was alive, Aunt Polly said so when she came in the morning to make sure the girls were well. But things still needed to settle down and it was best for Kizzie to be here rather than home.
She decided, during her stay, that if ever given the opportunity, she would never have children. Karl was impossibly loud, fussy, and always needing to be held by Ada.
"You were louder, Kizzie," she chided. "Used to wake up the whole house until Thomas came and held you."
"Sorry."
"Don't need to apologize all the time."
"Then how else will people know I feel bad?"
The knock at the door distracted her sister. "Take a seat with Karl while I let Aunt Polly in."
Kizzie stumbled backwards as Ada placed Karl in her arms. The baby was almost as long as her arm and heavy as a bag of rocks. How did Ada carry this in her tummy for so many months? And why?
She sat at the edge of the sofa, back straight as the baby struggled in her hold. He was wrapped in a blanket that smelled of sour milk and Ada's perfume.
Aunt Polly came through the archway first, a big smile on her face. "Good morning, Kizzie."
"Hello. I don't want to hold him anymore please."
Her aunt held out her arms and took the baby from Kizzie. "I reckon you won't want to babysit in the future?"
Why would she sit on a baby? "No."
"Kizzie," Ada called. "I need to speak with Polly for a few minutes. Help yourself to some tea and biscuits in the kitchen."
"Okay."
Kizzie stacked the biscuits like a tower. Five on each. She took a sip of tea when Ada and Polly came back from their talk.
"Ready to go, Kizzie?"
Ada was dressed, holding Karl close to her chest.
"Ada's coming, too."
"Okay."
Her aunt convinced Ada to return home and see Tommy. Kizzie never understood how people could convince others to do things for them. She was awful at listening and speaking. It must be a skill...like math or reading. Whenever she asked Tommy for something, he always did it, though.
The return home was quiet. Kizzie could tell Ada was nervous.
"Tommy's calling a meeting today," Aunt Polly said as they stepped through the foyer. "Take a seat with Karl while me and Kizzie go in first."
