CHAPTER SEVENTY
Ozzy swayed against the stacked crates in the warehouse by the sea.
Three more shots of morphine in the car and he was floating.
He hadn't been high in a long time. And certainly not from something this strong.
He looked at Tommy, standing further inside, and understood now his addiction to opium.
They had gotten here a bit ago. Parked the car and waited for Alfie to arrive. If Ozzy wasn't so gone, he'd be having a quiet panic attack. He didn't want to witness the man finding out about Kizzie... But it was entirely possible that Tommy wouldn't disclose that. Why would he? Tommy was a private man on the best days.
And that raised a different issue; if Tommy didn't say anything, it fell to Ozzy to somehow disclose to Alfie what had happened—one look at him will be enough for Alfie to understand something terrible happened.
Michael waited opposite Ozzy, beside the car. He was responsible for Ozzy—to give him morphine and to ensure his heart didn't suddenly stop.
Ozzy wouldn't mind going out that way: high as shit just a mile down from the beach. He could hear the seagulls. Smell the brine of the sea.
A car slowly appeared down the warehouse, slowly turning its way toward Tommy. Ozzy's vision blurred and rotated in a fuzzy mess of grays and blacks. And suddenly, there were two cars, two Tommys, and two skies.
Ozzy closed his eye and shook his fingers out. They had gone numb.
Shrouded in black with a big hat, Alfie exited the backseat of the car in a grumbling mess. The sound of his cane hitting the cement ground triggered Ozzy's encounter just hours ago with the bats and metal chains.
Each tap was a blow to his side. His stomach and chest.
Alfie's newest right-hand man stepped with him. Ozzy had seen him before. Nice enough man, quiet. Seasoned.
Kept his mouth shut when he saw Kizzie and Alfie together.
Tommy tossed away his cigarette. "I asked you to come alone and unarmed."
Alfie and the man approached him with languid steps. Ozzy still remained a piece of the background, thankfully.
"Yeah, well, alone I ain't never gonna do, am I?" Alfie said. Ozzy tried to gauge his temperament; an often impossible task since the man had mood swings at the drop of a hat. "And as for the cane, don't worry about it. That's just me sciatica. Always plays up around the winter and summer solstice."
