CHAPTER EIGHTY-ONE

"Away from the windows, Kizzie."

"I thought we were safe here." She complied anyway, and turned to face Finn.

Her twin stood with his hands in his trouser pockets, straight and tall. He was different. Like he had lost something.

"We are, but—"

"Tommy's orders."

He smiled. "Yeah."

The drowning sound of a car horn pierced the silence of Small Heath.

Kizzie turned back to the window, ignoring Finn's warnings.

"Ah!"

She was off, quicker than Finn could keep up. Like a ferret, she shimmied herself out of his grasp and quickly went outside to greet Alfie.

She closed the door and skipped across the street on the balls of her feet to reach him. His bright eyes tracked her every movement until she was before him. Alfie layed off the horn and stood straighter with help of his cane.

He was no longer embarrassed by it. Kizzie reasoned that the thing was an extension of him. What made Alfie, Alfie. She said it made him beautiful.

"Little bird," Alfie greeted, with a clearing of his throat. Thinking of their memories could wait until later, when they were alone and able to form new ones.

"Hello," she breathed out. With hands in front of her stomach, Kizzie wanted to reach for him and hold him close. But he started treatment. His body was weakened and fragile. He didn't look it, but on the inside, the cancer was fighting back. The doctor said so. "You're here."

"I'm here."

He just rolled out of bed. His white shirt was barely tucked in. His pants hung low without a belt. The hat hid the true state of his hair. The patches of red, inflamed skin also got worse from the cancer. Alfie believed he looked like a monster.
