CHAPTER NINETY
Ozzy was beginning to think that every visit to the beach would end badly.
When he got the phone call this morning from Tommy, asking him to come with him to Margate, he knew what to expect.
He did not like being the middleman between these two.
Alfie called him, too, right after the funeral. The man wasn't a drinker, but grief, Ozzy learned, made you feel drunk. Powerless and filled with emotion you'd rather stow away.
"He is coming?" Alfie asked him. His heavy voice created static through the receiver.
"Yeah," Ozzy said. "Not sure when, though. He's, uhm—" Distracted? Sad? Horrified by his own silence? "—you know."
Alfie made a sound. "I do... Well, I imagine this may be the last time we speak. I wanted to tell you that even though I said you were nothing to me, you became something. Outside of Kizzie. You're a good lad, Ozzy."
Ozzy nearly fell at the man's confession. Everyone grieves differently. Maybe, because he would die soon, Alfie didn't let himself feel his emotions. What would it matter after Tommy killed him? Despite being a powderkeg, Alfie was an enigma most days.
"Thank you, Mr. Solomons."
"Ozzy!"
The knock at his window jerked him out of his thoughts.
He recovered with a hand on his chest and opened the door "You found him?"
Tommy nodded, eyes squinted from the glaring sun. "Aye, at the beach." He put a hand on the car. "Stay here."
"You're sure?" Ozzy was told to keep an eye on Tommy. An order that came from Polly herself.
"Yes."
Ozzy felt the closing of his emotional door slap him in the face. He watched the man walk out from view and down the sand dunes.
He turned back to face the front seat, shook his head, and sighed. "Fuck me."

The hot sun burned through Tommy's jacket. Felt it like a flame to his skin.
He nearly tumbled over the sand. He needed to stow away these thoughts of her.
Of fire and heat and singed hair.
Alfie came into view. He faced the ocean with his dog. The beast sat on its hindlegs beside Alfie.
"I do hope you're gonna leave the dog out of this," he told Tommy.
