CHAPTER SIXTY-SEVEN

Not unlike most days with his friend, Ozzy knew more than he had any business knowing. Kezia Shelby had a man. And not just any man. Fucking Alfie Solomons.

Told Ozzy the other night. She had been smiling more than usual. A strange turn of events after... He heard about the little fight she had with Tommy in his office. Worried about the state of her brother. And Ozzy was worried too. The man took to using opium again. Caught the smell on his clothes.

Damn it all.

And today was a powder keg ready to explode.

Tommy had the brothers come over today. Along with Alfie for a meeting. Ozzy was asked to join. He would rather crawl into a hole than be in the same room as Arthur Shelby and Alfie Solomons.

He wasn't worried about accidently slipping the news of Alfie and Kizzie. But he was concerned about the other things. The age difference for one. Despite being such good friends, Ozzy felt wrong asking her if he touched her in a way that made her uncomfortable. Ozzy didn't like where his thoughts led him. He knew Alfie. Knew the respect he showed Kizzie. Ozzy didn't want to assume the worst of his friends. He didn't want to be like the family.

Kizzie deserved to make her own decisions. Ozzy and the family be damned.

"Hello," Kizzie whispered.

Ozzy stood in the corner, back pressed against the wall. He awaited orders from Tommy to be let inside his office.

"Little bird." Alfie looked dapper in a black suit and long, cream-colored scarf. Looked every bit the Jewish gangster. He even looked healthier--his skin wasn't as badly marred with red scabs and dry patches of skin. Ozzy was sure Kizzie had something to do with that. "You're shyer than usual, little bird. Is palace-life not to your liking? Do I become the dragon and steal you away from this gilded prison?"

Ozzy swore he heard her giggle.

"I told Ozzy. It's okay."

The man looked at him with a narrowed expression. Nodded and sent a silent threat. Not that Ozzy would ever say a word. He almost rolled his eyes. Despite all these years, the only person Alfie trusted completely was Kizzie... Maybe they were meant to be after all.

Alfie blinked heavily and took a step back when they heard echoing footsteps down the hall.

Mary greeted them with a smile. "Mr. Solomons, please wait for Mr. Shelby in his office. He will be in shortly."

Ozzy spent his time with Kizzie, close to Tommy's office. She refused to walk further away. Worried, maybe, for Alfie.

"What's the matter?" Ozzy finally voiced his concern. He couldn't sit and watch her pace anymore. It was making him dizzy.
