CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO
Kizzie felt strange.
Uptight. Like every muscle in her body was being rung out like a rag.
She blamed the letter under her mattress. But the letter had nothing to do with Alfie, who haunted every corner of her thoughts.
Her friend felt like a phantom each time she closed her eyes. Each time she looked at couples walking down the streets. Or spent time with Linda and Arthur. Why did she feel like she was running out of time?
Maybe it was because of the letter. And because of the Russian who spent the night with her brother. When Arthur came by the next morning, pale as a ghost, he got an earful from Tommy. And Kizzie expected a conversation between her and Tommy about the priest. But that never happened. Arthur never told him, and Kizzie had no clue why.
The bubble of ignorance between them was about to explode. She would never be allowed out ever again. Never be allowed out of his sight... Never allowed to see Alfie ever again.
And Kizzie needed to tell him how she felt about him. She knew for many years that she was in love with her friend. But never in a way she could place the feelings; they were too big, too complicated, and too much when she was younger. But she was certain, now more than ever, that she was in love with Alfie.
And she was going to make sure he knew that before she went away.
Kizzie approached the telephone booth with shaking knees. It was late. Too late for her to be out. She went around back of Arthur's house, like she used to when sneaking out as a child. The Blinder cars had no idea she left.
She stared at the clunky telephone hung on the booth wall. Kizzie knew Alfie's number by heart, just like she knew Tommy's. This was a betrayal to him. Kizzie made a promise to never involve herself with boys. But she already broke that promise, didn't she? With a priest and that boy at the Garrison years ago.
She knew that deep down Alfie would never hurt her, or make her do things she didn't want to do. He was respectful, genuine, and Kizzie wanted him to be hers.
Kizzie dialed his number. Listened to the five rings before they stopped.
"What?"
"Hello."
There was silence before Kizzie heard Alfie breathing. "Kizzie?"
"Hello."
"Everything alright?"
"I'm--"
"Something the matter?"
Well, yes. "I'm okay." She twirled the phone cord between her fingers. "I'm staying with Arthur and Linda. They let me sleep over sometimes."
