Chapter Fifty-Five
There wasn't much to complain about these days.
Business was good.
Food was good.
Cyril was good.
Personal life was...fine.
Certainly better than Thomas's. Rumor was that he went out of town. Alfie didn't know why. No one did.
Marriage did not befit Alfie. Not that he hadn't had the opportunity. Alfie kept his personal life close to the chest. Not even Kizzie ever knew of his romances over the years. If he ever got married, no one would ever know it.
He would not parade her around like Thomas did. Nor would he slacken security and mistake himself for all-mighty. Alfie hoped this served as a valuable lesson to his friend.
Marrying for love was a rarity in the world, and a fucking fairytale in Tommy and Alfie's. Marriage was a tax incentive. A stretch of power to be had. It had its place.
Alfie loved before. Even considered marriage once or twice. But that nagging doubt squirmed in his skull. Worry and uncertainty that these women would not be the same once they became a Soloman.
Nevermind children.
That was always a hard, impenetrable no. All but two of Alfie's previous women had an issue with that. But would the rest feel different once married? There were too many issues to not outweigh the positives.
And Alfie was a possessive man. The idea of marriage should have been black and white. Wanting to have a women in her entirety remained a wild, exhilarating thought.
The flowers Alfie delivered to Tommy arrived earlier in the week. A 'thank you' letter had been sent out swiftly after. Alfie did his job. So why did he feel more needed to be done?
He hadn't heard from Kizzie in some time. She didn't care for the woman Thomas married, but Alfie knew better than to think Kizzie wasn't experiencing a sense of sadness. She never did grasp the concept of death.
Alfie stared at the phone on his desk. Did he call her?
Tommy was a grieving mess but he was still a vicious, right cunt where Kizzie was concerned. Alfie wouldn't be surprised if the man tapped the phone lines to make sure she didn't get into any 'trouble'.
Poor girl. Made Alfie sick every time he thought about it.
Which was more than he maybe should. Their friendship formed something sweet inside him. Kizzie was normal by the rest of Alfie's world. She grew into the best person Alfie had ever known.
