"What the fuck?" Mia cried, finally tearing herself away from Oli. "You're not supposed to be back yet!"

"Oh thanks!" Oli laughed. "I missed you too!"

Mia thumped him playfully in the chest.

"You know full well that's not what I meant," she grinned, rolling her eyes at him. "I just- I can't-"

Oli pulled her back into his chest, smiling into her hair and inhaling her scent. God, he'd missed this so much. He always missed her after he'd been away, but this time felt much stronger. It almost ripped his heart out and he knew he couldn't wait a few more days to be back with her again.

"I know, love," he whispered softly. "I'm so sorry I didn't call. It was all very last minute, but I knew I couldn't be without you on the first Christmas with you as my wife."

Oli took her hand sweetly and kissed each of her knuckles in turn, lingering on the one that held the signs of her mortal commitment to him.

"Well, I'm glad you're here now," she grinned. "How did you manage to get here early?"

Oli grinned and tapped the side of his nose a couple of times and released Mia from his grip so that she could pick up her bags.

"Trade secrets," he smirked as Mia closed the office door behind her. "Nah, we weren't doing anything these last few days, but couldn't get a flight until Tuesday, but Jordan was checking the bags and randomly found an active portal sphere."

"I thought you couldn't use them for those kinds of distances?"

"We prefer not to," Oli shrugged. "But Jordan said they were pissed off with me moping around."

Mia let out a loud cackle as they made their way out to the lifts. She noticed Becky's desk was already clear and the fairy lights were all switched off so she and Ethan must have gone already too.

"So what about the others? Did they come back too?"

Oli shook his head.

"No, they didn't want to risk it," he explained. "Because we were so far away, it's a limited amount of power and each time someone passes through, it absorbs its own energy or something. The longer the distance, the more energy it needs to process. Vegan calculated there was just more than enough energy to get me back and that was it. You know usually you can pick up the sphere and it gets recharged? Well, it just disintegrated when I got through."

"Jesus, that's scary!" Mia whistled, pulling her coat around her as they walked out to the car.

It was already dark out and ice had begun to form on the windscreen. Mia started the engine and set the heating inside the car, rubbing her hands together briskly as she waited for the ice to melt and the mist to clear from the inside of the screen.

Oli tossed his bags into the back seat next to Mia's and settled into the passenger seat, buckling himself in and flipping on the stereo which was constantly playing the playlist he'd made for Mia right at the beginning of their relationship. Both of them had added a few more songs to it now and as "Floral and Fading" by Pierce the Veil rang out through the car, Mia shifted into gear and began the short journey back to their house.

Once inside the house, Mia shrugged off her coat, hanging it on a rack just inside the door. Oli followed, both of them kicking off their shoes and tossing their bags on the floor near the door as they made their way into the hall.
