CW: Nightmares, anxiety, nausea, some rehashing of events from the last few chapters, supernatural activity, betrayal, guilt.
A/N: A bit filler-y and dialogue heavy, but a bit shorter than I had planned. Still more drama to come though!
This was it. This was the end. The shadowy figures had won this time. Their maniacal laughter sent echoes through the empty building as they dragged their prey along the ground by its feet; its fingers frantically grasping at the cold floor as blood curdling screams escaped from its mouth.
Mia could do nothing but watch in horror. More shadowy figures stood behind her, their long, spiny fingers gripping her shoulders to stop her from trying to delay the inevitable. Whispers sounded between the screams and the mocking laughter, their voices taunting. "You lose, Mia. He belongs to us now!"
A sudden burst of anger spurred Mia and she wrenched free of the grip on her shoulders, immediately launching herself towards the figures in front of her, begging for their mercy. "Let him go! Take me instead!"
More maniacal laughter echoed and a croaking, broken voice sounded from a bodiless being somewhere amongst the shadows. "You're too late. You chose the wrong path and now he's gone forever."
The last thing Mia saw was the pleading look in her husband's eyes before the shadows dragged him into the darkness, his mouth open in a silent scream. Then the darkness overcame her too and all she could do was let it.
A high pitched scream echoed through the house and Mia bolted upright. Her hands were clammy and her hair clung to her face and neck. She spent a few moments catching her breath and realised the scream she heard was her own. That dream had felt so real and as the earlier memories began to filter back in, Mia almost wished she could go back to the dream - her reality was much more terrifying and she had no idea where to even begin. At the same time, she wished she hadn't fallen asleep at all: every minute counted and she had no idea how long Oli had already been gone.
Her phone sounded from the table and she grabbed it up without thinking, hoping that it would be Oli, until a split second later she remembered his phone was still there where Oli wasn't.
"Mia?" Jordan's voice broke through her thoughts.
"Jordan!" Mia breathed a sigh of relief, feeling like a literal angel had answered her silent prayers. She managed a half smile at that thought, too.
"What's going on, Mia?" Jordan sounded strained; nervous even. "I... uh... just popped out for breakfast and saw the latest copy of PowerSound on the shelf of the newsagents..."
Mia pinched the bridge of her nose and winced hearing the name of the awful publication. "It's not true, Jordan. Please tell me you believe me, right?"
"If you say it's not true, then I believe you," Jordan replied. "But I'm guessing you haven't heard from Oli?"
"He wasn't here when I got back," Mia choked out. "Someone emailed the pictures to him long before I even knew about it. His phone is here and I haven't heard from him at all since last Tuesday."
"Shit!" Jordan exclaimed, letting out a long breath. "We'll get this sorted, Mia. I'll call the other guys and we'll get to you as soon as we can, okay?"
"You think something bad has happened to him?" Mia squeaked out anxiously.
"I really hope not," Jordan replied gravely. "But a week is a long time. We've got to work fast if we've got any hope of finding him safe."
"I'm so scared, Jordan," Mia sobbed. "I can't bear to think about it."
"I know it's easier said than done, but try not to," Jordan attempted to comfort Mia. "We'll be with you soon."
