The next day, I put on my green waistcoat which represented my Irish status, and was presented with my staff and sword (which were simply stored and never used in defence for 5 years). I was then escorted to Elsa's quarters which now had a new door inputted beside to be my quarters, and cautiously entered into the room for the first time. My quarter was a room joined directly onto Elsa's quarters by an open arch. I went through immediately in to introduce myself to Elsa for the first time as her guard. I had no idea what she was going to do. I was still under the stereotypical, dangerous and unpredictable impression of Elsa. I walked in expecting to see her taking out her rage mercilessly on the room around her with her ice. I had a built in picture of a frozen warzone. But, upon entry, I saw only a frightened little of my age bundled up in the corner, head in hands and motionless. The walls around her were coated with an icy frosting leading to the source point which was her. The windows were blocked halfway up to contain the secret. It was cold but that went unnoticed by both me and her. I had never been bothered by the cold being Irish and she couldn't possible mind it come this point in her life. The heat however bothered me immensely. Taking a look at her, still motionless, I saw the neglect and loneliness of her life to date. I felt a deep feeling inside that it was to be my destiny to stop this from happening any more. I went over and sat down beside her. At this, she glanced up her eyes, without moving her head, for just a second to see who it was. I introduced myself, stated my business here and let her know that she could trust me and talk to me even from this early on point if she needed to. As of the protocol, "You can trust me Elsa" was the exact line. She sat in silence for a minute. I remained where I was. Finally, she spoke saying "You know who I am already as I did you. I have so little company that I never forget a face," referring to my previous visits. One was seven years ago and the other eight. She then got up and walked around a bit before finally coming to sit in her armchair. I started a one-sided conversation and told her my life story to start off the showing of trust and commitment to my job. She listened well, better than anyone had with me before. As of this I had already changed the stereotype in my mind. She never said so herself, but I guess she listened well as she had never before had anyone to listen to. She had never had a conversation with anyone where the topic was not her, whether she wanted it to be or not. After I finished with my story, she then proceeded with hers. It was quite brief, mostly centered on the incident with Anna. I expect that the only reason that she even said her story at all was that she was accepting my future presence here from now on and not making a job out of it. I didn't tell her that I already knew about the incident with Anna, she didn't need to know. Then, as if out of nowhere, I saw the first glimpse of her personality that would entertain me for the rest of my life to date. She said "I didn't know that I needed a guard, I always had Martha and John, suppose that they've given up on me, don't blame them though, I would give up on a worthless being like me if I was in their shoes." As she said this she suddenly rose from her chair and headed for the corner I found her. The sheet ice on the wall around us crackled and expanded, getting thicker. Choosing to ignore it, I walked over to her, put my hand on her shoulder and said, "I don't know the circumstances fully and I won't pretend that I do, but I'm here now to stay and I refuse to give up on anything or anyone, especially an old friend like you Elsa. I will be here from now on. You can trust me." Turning, I then left her and returned to my quarters to start to set up. While leaving I told her that I was only a shout away if needed. She then, yet again, said something completely out of the blue that no one had ever known her to do before, humour. She said "so no bell then." I stopped and looked around at her to see a sustained smile on her face looking back. Seeing the first glimmer of hope for her, I laughed and walked on grinning.
