Gavi's POV
A couple of days after our first "date", Saúl calls me into his office to chat about what comes next.
"It worked, then?"
"Yes", says Saúl, smiling widely. "Everyone is talking about you two. And Mónica has already received offers to be in magazines, adverts and tv shows. She's refusing all of them for now. She'll concentrate on promoting her music in the next couple of days".
"Cool", I say, slightly uninvested in this whole thing.
"We'll have dinner with her and her manager in a couple of days. Just to catch up and get ready for the next steps".
"Do I have to be there for that?"
"Do you have better plans?"
His raised eyebrow says it all.
"No. But I need the rest. We are playing nonstop at the moment".
"It will be quick. Don't worry".
**
"Ok, so you don't need to spend any time together apart from when we tell you to but we need you to know each other".
"How do we do that?", asks Mónica.
"Talking", I say, stating the obvious.
"It's just for interviews and such. We can't have you clearly showing you don't know the person you're so in love with. And it's better if it's something natural rather than you two memorizing lines".
"We'll leave you alone for a second so you can start", says Manu. And both him and Saúl leave the room.
"My favourite colour is blue. My favourite food is pasta. I started to sing when I was 6...".
"Wait! Don't just recite your entire biography".
"What do you want to know, then?"
"Let's start from the beginning, I guess. You're from Barcelona, right?"
"Yes, and you aren't. The accent gives it away".
"I'm from Sevilla. But I've been here for so long that my accent is all over the place. Sometimes you can barely hear it and sometimes it's quite thick".
"I would love to hear your real accent. I'm sure it's really nice", she says with a genuine smile.
"Yours is nice too".
And the smile gets bigger.
"So singing since 6. I was probably that age when I started to play".
"Did you always want to be a footballer?"
"I guess. I was told I was good when I was so young that I never really thought about other possibilities. What about you?"
"Oh, I always knew I wanted to be a singer but it's hard to make it so I also concentrated a lot on my studies. Just in case".
"Makes sense".
I would have never expected us to have had such similar lives in a way. But I like that. She probably understands what I've been through better. And not many people do.
Mónica's POV
It's nice that we have so much in common. I didn't really expect that to be the case.
"And you don't have any siblings?"
"No", I say. "Single child. And according to my dad it really shows".
"What does that mean?"
"I guess they babied me too much. My grandparents too. When I got to Operación Triunfo, I struggled a bit because the rest of the people were adults and I still behaved like a 12-year-old".
"I get that. I started to play with the first team when I was still a baby and it was weird to share a dressing room with people talking about their kids and all that".
I laugh. We really have a lot in common.
"All good here?", asks Saúl.
"Yes".
I notice Pablo's tone changing and that makes me realize that when we were talking alone he felt more...genuine? I guess that's the only word to describe it.
"Great great".
Manu enters the room too, hanging up his phone.
"We have a photoshoot tomorrow, Mónica".
"I thought I wasn't accepting any of those offers".
"It isn't about your boyfriend, it's for the EP. I'll pick you up at 11".
I see Saúl giving some papers to Manu and then he turns to us again.
"Let's go Pablo. You have training tomorrow".
"Do we have to leave already?"
He just asked the same question I wanted to ask. I want to keep talking to him.
"You can talk more another day. Let's go now".
"Can I go to the toilet first?"
"Make it quick".
I start to pick up my things too and only a couple of minutes later, Pablo comes back from the bathroom.
I notice him looking at our managers and then he puts something in my jacket's pocket.
"What are...".
He brings his index finger to his lips and I nod.
Once they are gone, I take the piece of paper he gave me and it's not something I expected. It's his phone number and a small sentence: If you want to talk more.
Yes, that's genuine. And when Manu isn't paying attention, I add the number to my contacts and send Pablo a quick text so he knows my number too.
