Mónica's POV
I hear my phone ringing and I'm surprised to see it's Aurora calling. We saw each other the other day and we don't normally talk on the phone but maybe that's about to change.
"Hi".
"Hi! Are you with my brother?"
"He's in the shower right now".
"Good. Don't tell him anything but my parents want to talk to you".
I swallow. I don't think I'm ready for another encounter with them.
"Why don't you want me to tell Pablo?"
"They want to apologize without him there. Please, Mónica. I know it's a lot to ask but they truly look like they are sorry".
"Ok, text me the details of the meeting. I can't hear the shower anymore so he's probably on his way here".
"I will! Thank you!"
**
When I get to the house, my mind goes back to how I left it not that long ago. But this time things are different. For starters, it's Pablo's mum that opens the door for me.
"Hello, Mónica. Thank you for accepting to talk to us. Do you want something to drink?"
"I'm ok, thank you".
Aurora and her dad are in the living room waiting for us.
"Mónica, we have to apologize. We've been terrible to you. There is no excuse for it".
"Ok", I say in a very neutral tone. I can't bring myself to speak to them in any other way right now.
"We get we've hurt you and our son. But we can't continue like this. We can't lose him".
A part of me understands it and wants to help but they need to understand how much pain they've caused. It takes more than a simple sorry to fix this.
"I can't forgive that easily. I'm sorry. I have been stepped on my entire life and what you did to me was too painful but I wouldn't even mind it that much if it was just me that was hurt. But you hurt Pablo so many times. And you knew you were hurting him but continued to act the same way. He gave you plenty of chances to change and you didn't take any. You actually did the opposite".
I can see them looking ashamed at being told off by who they see as a kid.
"You're right", says his mum. "And I know it'll take time for you to forgive us fully. If you ever can. But we're going to do everything in our hands to prove to you that we're being honest. We want to get to know you. And we need our son back".
Aurora grabs my hand and I turn to look at her. She has also been hurt and no one even thought about how this was affecting her. Not even me.
"Ok. I believe you. But why did you want to talk to me without Pablo here?"
"He's a bit hot-headed. You might have noticed that".
I snort, making them laugh.
"He wouldn't have let us talk properly. And we wanted to ask you for help. He won't even pick up our calls. His dad tried calling with Aurora's phone and when he knew it was us, he hung up".
"I'm not sure I can convince him to see you right now. He's really hurt. We might need to give him some time".
"We had an idea. But it isn't just you that needs to help", says Aurora.
And when they tell me about it, I'm not sure I'm 100% into the idea. But I say I'll help them anyway. I just want Pablo to be happy.
