Madelyn heard the house door slam shut, startling her. She sat up in bed, and ran her fingers through her hair. She heard her dad call her name from the front room, and she sighed before rolling out of bed.

She walked to the front room, where her dad was standing beside the kitchen island. He looked angry, and she could feel a knot forming in her stomach. She walked a little closer, and he lifted his hand, causing her to flinch.

"I'm not...I'm not gonna hit ya," he said, taking a deep breath. He grabbed his wallet, and Madelyn stayed quiet, just staring at him.

"I'm leaving for good," he said, picking up his bag and throwing it over his shoulder. Madelyn didn't feel anything. He had treated her like shit, and he was finally leaving. She was finally going to be free from him. That's all she could think about.

Freedom.

"There's some money in the drawer over there, but here's some more," he said, pulling out fifty bucks from his wallet and placing it on the island. "Goodbye Madelyn," he whispered, wrapping his arms around her. She couldn't bring herself to hug him back, and he knew she wouldn't want to.

Her expression was blank and emotionless as she stared at him. He took one last look around before walking towards the front door and grabbing his keys. He looked at her while opening the door and walking out.

Once the door was shut, she let out a deep breath and put her hand on her heart. "Oh god," she said, looking up at the ceiling for a minute. She didn't let any tears fall, but she felt a sense of relief.

Madelyn made her way over to the Curtis' house, her heart pounding with anticipation. As she walked in, she was greeted by the familiar faces of her friends. She smiled and took a seat next to Sodapop, feeling grateful for their company.

"Hey guys," she said, looking around the room. "Where's Dally at?"

"Surprised you don't know," Steve said, handing Two-Bit a slice of chocolate cake. "He got thrown in the cooler."

She knew that dating Dallas meant accepting that he lived life on the edge, but it was still annoying when he was constantly in trouble with the fuzz.

"Ya know what for?" Madelyn asked, her curiosity piqued.

"Probably shoplifting," Ponyboy said, his tone casual.

She knew he had a good heart, but his actions didn't reflect that. But on the other hand life was too short to play it safe.

Trying to distract herself from her frustration, she changed the subject. "Oh, and my dad finally left today," she said. She spoke with a sense of relief, as if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders.

Sodapop, who was listening in, let out a sigh of his own. "About damn time," he said, his voice sympathetic.

Madelyn was sitting outside the DX gas station, with a cold can of Pepsi in her hand, enjoying the warmth of the sun on her skin. The DX was a popular spot for the locals, and it was always busy, especially during hot summer days.

Steve and Soda, who worked at the station, were running back and forth, filling up cars and helping customers, while Madelyn tried to hide in the shade.

As Madelyn was enjoying her drink, she saw Dallas,Pony and Johnny walk over to them, and she smiled at him as he approached her. "Hey Dally," she said, before giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.

Dallas grinned, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Hey darlin'," he said, his voice low and smooth. "Whatcha doin' out here all by yourself?"

Madelyn shrugged, feeling content just to be around him. "Just hanging out ," she said, taking another sip of her Pepsi. "What about you guys? You look like you're up to no good," she giggled

Pony and Johnny laughed, while Dallas just grinned. "Just out for a walk," he said, his eyes flickering with amusement. "You know how it is."

"Hey, Dally, you got out fast," Sodapop said, shaking his hand. Dallas grinned, "Yeah, good behavior, man," he replied, lighting his cigarette. Steve, who was filling up someone's car, asked if Sylvia had talked to him since she was walking around the station.

Madelyn felt a twinge of anger as she heard Sylvia's name. She hated Sylvia after everything she did. She treated Dallas like dirt and cheated on him while he was in jail. She took a deep breath, trying to keep her cool.

"Nah, I haven't seen her since," Dallas said, hesitating as he looked at Madelyn. "I haven't seen her for a while." Madelyn knew that Dallas was trying to avoid talking about Sylvia in front of her.

"Where are y'all going?" Madelyn asked, sipping her pop. "Out, I have to get something," Dallas said, looking out to the road as a car pulled in. "Time to go anyway," Ponyboy said, walking off the cement floor.

Meanwhile, Soda and Steve continued to help customers, their faces bright with smiles.
