Sarah had left John and everything familiar behind, and now found herself alone in a new city. She had been trying to drown her sorrows in alcohol for the past hour, but it seemed like the alcohol was only making her feel worse.
She sat at the end of the bar, staring blankly at the bottles in front of her. The bartender, a middle-aged man named Mike, noticed her melancholic mood and approached her. "You okay?" he asked, his voice laced with concern.
Sarah shook her head. "No, not really," she replied, taking a swig from her glass.
Mike nodded sympathetically. "Want to talk about it?"
Sarah shrugged. "Not really," she said. "It's just...everything's falling apart."
Mike leaned in closer. "Well, let me buy you a drink at least. That'll make you feel a little better, won't it?"
Sarah hesitated for a moment before nodding in agreement. Mike poured her another drink, and they started chatting. They talked about everything from music to politics, and Sarah found herself opening up to Mike in ways she never thought possible.
As the night wore on, Sarah began to feel a sense of comfort around Mike that she hadn't felt in a long time. He was kind and attentive, and she couldn't help but be drawn to him.
But as the night drew to a close, Mike's intentions became clear. He leaned in close to her and whispered, "You know, I could take care of you. You wouldn't have to worry about anything if you were with me."
Sarah felt a twinge of discomfort at his words. She had heard that kind of offer before, and it never ended well. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice shaking slightly.
Mike smiled slyly. "I mean, I could make sure you had a place to stay, and that you were taken care of in every way possible. If you catch my drift."
Sarah's heart sank as she realised what he was implying. She had always been on her own, and the idea of relying on someone else made her feel vulnerable.
She pushed herself away from the bar and stood up, grabbing her bag. "Thanks for the drink," she said, her voice cold. "But I think I need to go."
Mike reached out to grab her arm, but she jerked away from him. "Come on, Sarah, don't be like that," he said. "I was just trying to help."
Sarah glared at him. "I don't need your help," she spat, her anger building. "I'm leaving."
She stormed out of the bar, ignoring Mike's calls to come back. As she walked away, she knew that she couldn't let anyone else take advantage of her vulnerability. She needed to find a way to stand on her own two feet, no matter how hard it might be.
