⇄ ◃◃ ⅠⅠ ▹▹ ↻Beverly's POV
6 ½ years old.
Today has been hectic already, and it's not even 1 pm. The kids woke up today and raided the pantry. They got a hold of Bucky's stash of secret plum candy. To say he was unhappy is an understatement. But, it didn't put a damper on his mood. He is really excited about today. At work, he has been up to his eyeballs in stress and really needs it today. So, when it begins, I promised I would take care of the children.
He made lunch for us all, and prepared the table, as I changed the kids out of their swimming costumes from their morning in the pool. It chilled them out, and now, they aren't as hyper as they were in the morning. As Bucky is loading the dishwasher, there is a knock at the door. The kids are playing in the garden, and I'm cleaning the living room. I call out that I'm opening the door, and when I do, I see a wide, smiley face. Sam steps into the house, a case of beer in his hands, and pulls me into a hug. Bucky steps out of the kitchen, and they both hug each other. I grab the beer, putting it in the fridge to cool for a while from the long car ride Sam took to get here in the scorching sun.
I walk outside into the garden to see the kids running around the swingset, chasing each other. Their laughter is a beautiful sound, and a smile is wide on my face. Sam and Bucky follow after me, a bag of chips in Bucky's hand. They perch on the wicker chairs under the tree, in the shade, watching the kids and having a quiet conversation. I walk over to the shed, grabbing the pool cover. I don't want the water to get hot as it is in the direct vision of the sun, so I cover it up. Just as I'm finished, Becca walks over to me, pulling the end of my shirt. I look down at her, seeing sweat pouring down her brow.
"Are you okay, sweety?" I ask.
"Can you play with us, please?" She begs. "There are only three of us and we need an even number."
"Okay, honey."
I pull the cover fully over the pool and walk over to the swing set, seeing Steve and Jamie whispering to each other. Becca has an evil smirk on her face as we approach them, and I really don't like where this is going. When we stand in front of them, Steve and Jamie stop talking altogether and look as if they have been caught in the act. What they were caught doing, I do not know. Becca takes charge of the situation, and orders Steve and Jamie to cover their eyes and count to 10. When they do, Becca grabs my hand and pulls me across the garden. We hide behind Bucky and Sam, shushing them when they ask questions. Sam has a smirk on his face, but Bucky has a warm smile.
Steve and Jamie end their counting and begin looking for us. They even call out to Bucky to tell us if they know where we are, but he just shrugs his shoulders. That's probably what they were whispering about, being cheaters. Sam and Bucky converse as Steve and Jamie continue to look for us, but failing miserably. Sam keeps looking behind him, directly at us, as if he's trying to give away our position. He even walks away from his chair to get the beers, putting Becca and me in a dangerous situation. They almost caught us, but Bucky directed them elsewhere. I think he's getting them back for trying to cheat. When Sam gets back with the beer, he pops the cap and hands Bucky one, both of them nursing the cool liquid.
Sam has come a long way for today, but I know he doesn't mind. He loves spending time with the kids, and enjoys spending time with Bucky even more. That's why it wasn't a hard decision to make him the godfather of Steven, Rebecca, and Jamie. He and Bucky have come a long way from their argumentative ways, almost becoming as close as Bucky was to Steve.
Eventually, Steve and Jamie find us and scowled Bucky for lying to us about our hiding space. But, Bucky reminds them that you get nowhere when you cheat. We continue playing the game, but changing teams. Steve keeps trying to convince me to cheat, and I just keep rolling my eyes. The game goes on for the remainder of the afternoon until Bucky calls us in for dinner. Sam stays to eat and even helps me put the kids to bed whilst Bucky cleans up the kitchen. We wave him goodbye as he drives out of our driveway, the night already dawning on us.
