"Melissa he's not good for you" her friend said "and he's not even cute" she looked at her phone scrolling through Michael's mugshots.

"Hey!" Melissa said offended "don't be rude!"

"Yeah Dixie don't judge a book by its cover" the boy sitting next to Dixie elbowed her.

"Thank you Owen" Melissa said looking at Dixie's disapproving face.

"All I'm saying is you've really changed.." Dixie locked her phone and sat it down on the lunch table.

Melissa shrugged and played with her salad. Her phone lit up next to her books. The contact name 'Mikey' popped up on the screen.

"Ooo! What he say what he say!" An enthusiastic girl sitting next to Melissa said.

"Brandi please calm down" Dixie rolled her eyes "but what'd he say!" She leaned forward unable to fight her curiosity.

Melissa unlocked her phone and read his text:

Mikey: Hey babe, I'm coming "home" today :)

The three girls giggled and squealed with excitement "he calls you babe?" Dixie asked.

"Yeah it's like our thing" Melissa smiled.

They squealed again.

"Say something back!" Brandi watched eagerly.

Melissa: hey, great! Everything okay?

Mikey: eh more or less...what about you? Are you doing okay?

"AHH he's so cute!" Brandi smiled "he wants to know how you are!"

Melissa: yeah I'm doing good

Mikey: good :) hey wait, aren't you in school now?

Melissa: yeah

Mikey: ooo bad girl texting during school hours

Melissa: what can I say? Looks like you finally rubbed off on me Clifford

Mikey: maybe I'll come and visit ;)

"Yes! Say okay! Say yes!" Brandi shook Melissa's arm.

"Okay okay" she replied texting her response.

Melissa: sounds good :)

Mikey: you're still my good girl babe, gtg love you xx

Melissa: always, love you too!

The girls giggled again.

"I don't get it" Owen sighed.

"Don't get what?" Brandi asked.

"Why girls get so excited when a guy texts them" he leaned onto the table "it's just a text"

The three girls gasped.

"Just a text?" Dixie asked "it's more than that!"

"How?" Owen smiled satisfied that he annoyed her.

"It's super important when a guy responds! It means he's engaged in the conversation and wants to hear more of what you have to say, and when I say respond I mean more than a single word or letter" Dixie went on but Owen tuned her out after 'it's super important'.

"Don't waste your breath" Brandi said to Dixie.

"Okay so if I text you then it's a big deal?" Owen asked pulling out his phone and typing something.
