{Two months before the Blast}

It had been about a year since Nya merged with the ocean to save them all. A year since the team had been complete.

Jay left two months after the funeral, saying he needed some time to reflect on everything, and that he would be back soon. He stepped down that mountain, and he never came back up.

Kai followed him a few weeks later- couldn't handle the stress and grief of it all. Lloyd begged him to stay, begged him not to discard the team, to abandon him, but Kai's flame had gone out, and he took the young blonde's with him.

After days of waiting by the window, Lloyd packed his bags and made his way down the spiral stairs leading to their lonely monastery.

Cole walked him to the city, and the nindroids weren't sure if he was coming back or not. However, as night fell, Earth returned through the gates, and Pixal all but threw herself at him, artificial tears splashing onto both of them.

Wu disappeared shortly after, determined to find a way to fix it all.

Eventually, Zane turned off their emotions, but his two remaining teammates managed to convince him to turn them back on, reminding them emotions were part of healing.

The three of them continued protecting the city, but with their limited members and a lack of major villains, the Commissioner gave them new tasks to keep them occupied:

So undercover work became their new missions.

"Alright, a tech lab is suspected of being part in an illegal organisation. Pixie, this is your speciality," Zane said, smiling at the samurai, who whooped in excitement. Cole grumbled, crossing his arms.

"Come on, they went last time!" He complained, and Pixal giggled, pinching him on the cheek.

"When you become an expert in tech, then you can go on this mission Gaia," She teased, before pressing a button on her wrist. Immediately, a disguise surrounded them.

Her metal skin changed to a dark tone with light vitiligo across it. Her hair turned dark brown, and pulled into a tight bun at their neck.

She started towards the doors, calling back to the two in the bunker.

"Alright, I'll be back by dawn, don't miss me for too long." Turning back around, they smirked at Cole. "Keep an eye on Zane, and don't blow anything up without me."

"Yes boss," He joked, saluting to her. Waving, she left and Cole turned to the Ice Elemental.

"Soo, wanna make pancakes?" He asked, "I won't burn anything this time."

Zane chuckled. "Sure, I'll show you how to make them fluffy, just the way you like it."

{Twenty four minutes before the Blast}

"Alright, open your eyes." Cole smiled, blinking his eyes open, adjusting to the bright light in front of him. Gasping, his eyes filled with happy tears.

Both nindroids were holding a strawberry and chocolate cake that had the number candles '2' and '3' on it. Behind them on the dining table was a small collection of boxes wrapped in decorative paper.

Streamers were sloppily hung to the wall, and a banner reading: 'Happy Birthday!' was clipped onto the ceiling.

"Happy 23rd Birthday, Gem," Zane told him, and the cake was placed on the table.
