When you're a nine you no longer have to wear braids with ribbons but before that you have to keep them neatly tied.

Next Is the jackets Sevens they get their first front buttoned jacket,  a row of large buttons that designated them as sevens.

The Eights had smaller buttons and the first time, Pockets. Indicating that they were mature enough to keep track of their own small belongings.

Sevens, Fours, Fives and Sixes all wore jackets that fastened down the back so they would have to help each other dress and would learn interdependence.

The front buttoned jacket was the first sign of independence, the very first visible sign of growing up.
