035 POV:

I had made it quite far from home. I was overcome with wanderlust, and it brought me down a river. The river was very muddy due to, I assume, frequent flooding onto the muddy shore and pulling the dirty contents of the shore into the water. I can barely see a thing, I complained in my mind. How can water even get this bad?

I had already began to kill the fish that swam here. In the large bodies of water I am more accustomed to, my corrosive secretions usually dissipate before it reaches too many fish; but here in this more contained habitat, I proved devastating to the ecosystem. It saddened me deeply.

It was then that I spotted someone approach, and I paused my sorrow to investigate. They were quite strange; a black coat, black gloves, black pants, black shoes that looked fancier than the footwear of those that usually came by the water (if they had any at all), and a white mask that appeared to have a beak longer than that of any bird I'd ever seen. I watched as they crouched down with a large white bucket and searched the rocks on the shore.

I swam a bit closer to the shore, where I could hear them grumble under their breath.

049 POV:

“This is a peasant’s work,” I angrily mumbled to myself as I began to lift the rocks. “Is this my reward for curing the populus? To collect the leeches that save their lives? Unbelievable. Truly.” I began to pick the leeches out of the mud and drop them in the bucket I had with me.

That’s when I spotted movement in the river only a few meters in front of me. It was a big creature, not one that ordinarily swam in rivers so close to humanity. “What a large fish,” I noted out loud. “What are you doing all the way over here? …I’m talking to aquatic life, they don’t understand me. I’ve gone loony.”

“Not all aquatic life is unintelligent,” I heard a voice respond from the water. There was a strangely alluring aspect to it, one that did not affect me as much as I believe it was meant to.

“... hello?” I walked closer to the river. “Is there a person swimming here? If so, there are less murky places to do so in. I recommend you exit the water before you grow ill.” I held out a hand close to the water for the person to grab. “My hand is muddy, but I assume your entire body is so that shouldn’t be a problem for you.”

A webbed hand took mine. I was taken aback as a head poked out of the water, seemingly normal for an adult man except for the porcelain mask upon its face. The creature simply waved with their other hand. “...why are your fingers webbed?” I asked.

“That’s just, uhm, a costume,” they answered. “It helps me when I swim. I love swimming, so, yeah.”

“Must you insist on a dirty river though? And these webs are quite flesh-like,” I stated as I felt at the webs in their hand.

They retracted their arm back into the water, and it disappeared from my view. “It’s a high-quality suit. And muddy water helps me develop my sight. The question is what are you doing here? I don’t see you around here much.”

I sighed. “If you must know, I am here to collect leeches. I am a doctor, you see, and my patients disrespect me by making me leave work and gather these leeches that help them. I truly don’t understand it.” They chuckled at my response. “And if you’re just the same as any other person, why does your voice draw me closer? It is oddly alluring.”

They thought for a moment before smiling and laughing. “I think that’s your problem. Why do you like my voice so much? Do you find me attractive, doctor?”

“I am attracted to nothing and no one but my work.”

“Then why would you be attracted to my voice, and so openly admit it at that?”

“... it is possible for a person to compliment another without experiencing any romantic attraction I suppose. Don’t flatter yourself with fantasies of us as lovers. It is highly unlikely, nere I say unfeasible.”

They laughed loudly. I hated how it was enticing. It made me wish to jump into the river with them. I hated it. I despised it greatly. But I hid this desire from them. “Nevermind that. Would you be so helpful as to help me search the shore for leeches? I really must return to the town and get my outfit cleaned so I may get back to work.”

They smiled in response. “Sure, I could use a break from swimming. I can still get a leg workout in the water though, I can search from here.”

I shrugged. “If you wish.” He gave me his assistance in the searching, and we collected quite a few leeches as we moved along the shore; filling ⅔ of the bucket in a mere half hour.

035 POV:

“I appreciate the help,” the doctor stated before waving and walking away. Once he was a decent distance away, I let out a big sigh of relief.

That was close, I thought to myself. I need to return home, fast.

“Excuse me,” I spoke to the few fish swimming around who had not yet died from my secretions. “Do any of you happen to know how to get back to the ocean?” None of them gave a response, simply seeming confused before swimming away or falling dead to the dirt below. They’ve never been helpful, I reminded myself. Despite this reaction, I continued to ask around, only for the same response again and again.

I’ll never get back to the ocean, I dejectedly announced in my mind. I’m not too opposed to making a new home here, but the humans living nearby may find and hunt me down. Just then, an idea came to me. Unless…

I began to think about the doctor that visited me. If I make allies with him, he could stick up for me when he inevitably figures out my species. Who would oppose a respected doctor?

I could lure the people of the village to me and hold them under until they lose consciousness. I'll only inhabit the ones that I need, making sure they look similar enough to the original he saw me as. Then, they would be found by him and he would use the leeches on them. He will eventually run out, and have to continuously return to me to gather more. We will grow to be great allies! After all, I continued, my face supporting a little blush accompanied by a smile. I don’t mind his company in the slightest.
