Gabby's POV
The past seven months of my life can be boiled down to one simple word: hard. Nothing about my journey through sobriety has been easy, so I must be good at doing hard things, right? I mean, statistically speaking, I have conquered many hard things, but I still get this knot in my stomach before every mountain I climb because I know it's only a matter of time before I slip and fall.
"You practicing your dance moves over there?" Axe laughs as I shift nervously in the small waiting room seat. My leg bounces up and down as my hands slightly shake in my lap. I don't know why I'm so nervous. I have driven every day for the past two weeks, I know I can do this. But it feels like this is the next step in creating my dream life. I mean, my learner's permit was the first real document I had. A document with my real name on it. Because now, I'm Gabby, not Ginger. I'll never be her again.
"Shut up," I grumble. Obviously, today is the day I take my driving test and Axe insisted that he come with me. I think it's only fair. After all, he is the reason I'm able to do this.
"You will be fine," he assures as he places his hand on my thigh, "you could pass this test with your eyes closed."
"Well, I think that's illegal," I joke. I just need to calm down. On the list of hard things I've done, this doesn't even make the top ten. If I can go through detox, I can take this stupid driving test.
"Probably not the best course of action," he laughs. "But seriously, Gab, you got this. It's just around the block and the first exit off the highway. We've driven it a million times. You got this."
"It's just so crazy I'm actually doing this," I muse.
"Just one more step in the right direction," he smiles.
"Gabriella Wilson?" A short, older woman with gray hair and glasses calls from the doorway.
"Just breathe and use your mirrors. You got this," Axe says as I stand on shaky legs and walk toward the instructor.
"You ready Ms. Wilson?" she asks.
"As I'll ever be," I sigh.
I can do hard things. I can do hard things and I will overcome them.
------------
"SO?" Axe asks as I reappear in the small waiting room and the instructor walks behind the desk.
"She's going to get my learner's permit," I sigh.
"Okay, well this is only your first try, you still get two more, and-and we can practice more. Shit, I have to call-" he rambles as a huge smile appears on my face.
"She's going to get my learner's permit so she can throw it away," I say with a gigantic grin spread across my face.
"You passed?" he asks.
"I passed," I confirm with a nod.
"I KNEW IT!" He cheers as he wraps his arms around me and spins me around. Both of us are laughing as he places me back on the ground and we notice the entire DMV is staring at us. This realization only makes us laugh louder as my instructor approaches us.
"We just reused the photo from your learner's. Here's your temporary license, Ms. Wilson. The real one will come in the mail in 2 weeks. Congratulations," she says and she turns and leaves.
"You're official now," Axe says as we walk out of the large building.
"I'm Gabby now," I mutter.
"Have you been somebody else the past couple months?" he laughs.
