Gabby's POV
"Hank?" I ask as I realize the strange shadow belongs to a friend and not an enemy. "You scared the shit out of me."
"Sorry," he laughs as he takes a few steps into the light. As the light shines over him, I notice he's much thinner than normal. I don't know why but something feels off about him.
"I just got back from dinner. I uh- I thought I had to work tonight but they gave me the night off. I'm usually not back until late," I explain. I don't know how long he has been here but more importantly, I don't know how he knew I would be here.
"Well, then I guess I got lucky," he laughs as I finally make it to the top of the stairs and stand only a few feet in front of him.
"Not that I don't appreciate the visit, but-uh what are you doing here?"
"Well, I realize I've been a shit sponsor. I've had my own shit going on and I kinda dropped the ball so I wanted to check in on you," he says and something in me relaxes. He's been ignoring my calls for a few weeks and will only respond with short texts. I thought I did something to upset him, but I should've known better. Besides, Hank is a grown man with a family and a business, he has a lot more on his mind than just me.
"Well, I appreciate it, but it's really not necessary. I know you got a lot going on besides me," I shrug.
"Yeah, but I still need to check up on you."
"Yeah, well a lot has happened," I chuckle.
"I'd say. I saw the car you drove up in." He says as I nervously chuckle. "You gonna invite me in or what?"
"Oh yeah- um- of course," I ramble as I move to unlock the door. Though this small space is still not much, it looks a lot more presentable as I have been able to splurge on a small dining room table, a cover for my recliner, and an actual comforter set for my bed. I am no longer embarrassed by the place I call home, but something about Hank walking into my safe space feels weird. Something about this entire situation feels off.
"Oh wow, you've done a lot with the place," he muses as I turn on the living room light and throw my keys on the kitchen counter.
"It's amazing what you can do with a little bit of money," I laugh as I take two cups from the cabinet and fill them with water from my fancy new Britta Filter.
"You've really moved up in the world," he says as I hand him the water and he takes a seat at my dining room table.
"Speaking of moving up in the world, I got my driver's license today," I smile.
"Really?"
"Yeah, and then the club gave me a car, like a whole ass car."
"They just gave it to you?" He asks with a raised eyebrow as he licks his lips. Something about this simple action sends a shiver down my spine but I ignore it. It's just Hank, he wouldn't hurt a fly.
"Yeah, I tried to give it back to them, but they refused. So I ended up with a car," I laugh. I still can't believe they did that for me.
"I'm sure you paid them back some way," he mutters.
'Well, they say I'm the best bartender they've had," I joke.
"Oh, I'm sure you are," he says as he rolls his eyes. I know he wasn't thrilled that my new job is at a bar, but I think I've proven that I can handle it. Now I'm not even tempted to drink and I know that I can turn away anything else. I know I am strong enough to stay sober.
