A/N: In the words of my sister who has been helping me brainstorm for this book, "fucking took them long enough."
Mom, seriously, you aren't allowed to read this chapter.
Gabby's POV
"Let's get out of here," he whispers as I crash back to earth.
He just kissed me in front of everyone.
He kissed me.
HE FUCKING KISSED ME.
What the fuck? What the flying fuck is going on? What alternate universe did I just slip into and how can I stay in it?
"You good?" he chuckles as I stand as still as a statue.
Am I good? Yeah, that's a million-dollar question because part of me is very good. But a bigger part of me doesn't know how the hell I feel because I don't know what's going on.
"Yeah," I finally answer with a smile. He takes my hand in his as he leads me through the crowd. I think I am about to be even better.
"About damn time!" I hear Grace call.
"Have fun!" Skillet yells with a whistle.
"And maybe wait until after midnight, I got a lot of money riding on this," Wolf adds.
"If you do it before midnight, it'll pay for part of our honeymoon," Shorty says with a laugh.
Axe doesn't respond to the calls and I try my best to ignore them as he literally pulls me toward the parking lot. I can't say I'm resisting but my brain has completely short-circuited so I have no idea what I should do in this situation. I don't want to resist. I want him to kiss me again, maybe in another place. But I don't want to ruin our friendship and I know he's not ready for a relationship yet. He's still in love with her. He's in love with a ghost and that's something I could never compete with, I don't want to.
Finally, we make it to his truck. Niether of us has said a word and honestly, I don't think we know what to say. I want to ask him what the fuck he's doing. I want to tell him to stop. I want to tell him to kiss me again.
"Get in," he says as he opens the passenger door for me. I blindly follow his instructions as he shuts my door and practically runs around the front of the truck.
"Where are we going?" I ask. I have so many questions but this seems like the easiest one to ask and answer.
"Your place," he says simply as he throws the truck in drive and I hear gravel spin beneath the tires.
I have so many follow-up questions, but the only one I can push through my constricted windpipe is, "Why?"
Why did you kiss me?
Why did you drag me away from our friends' wedding?
Why is this happening now?
"Not here," he responds as we fly down the back roads that lead to my apartment.
"Why?" I ask again.
Why won't you just tell me what the hell is going on?
Why did you kiss me in the first place?
Are you going to do it again?
"Just-" he starts in a harsh voice but takes a deep breath before continuing, "I'll explain everything when we get to your place."
I want to argue but I have used up all of the oxygen in my lungs so I just lean forward and turn on the radio. I hum along to the song as I realize it's a love song. Of course, it's a fucking love song. You got one hell of a sense of humor, I say in my head as I look at the sky through the truck window.
