Moving Day

May 22-St. Charles, Missouri

"That the last of it?" Peter asked as you put the final box in the back of his car.

"Yep."

"And you said that we'd need to rent a truck."

"You gonna keep saying I told you so, or are we gonna go?"

"I like it when you're bossy."

He placed his hand under your chin and lifted your head up before kissing you.

"Can you not?" Riley asked.

"My bad!"

When you got to the house, the three of you started taking in the boxes and putting things away.

"Baby, how many shoes do you have?"

"Too many." Riley replied.

"Not enough." You joked.

Riley took her boxes to her room and organized her things, while you did the same.

"I'm so glad you decided to move in."

"So am I."

You went over to the bed and removed the cases off the pillows.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm putting my pillowcases on."

"What's wrong with these ones?"

"Nothing. I just like my silk ones better."

"What do you need silk pillowcases for?"

"My hair. It helps with breakage. Plus, they're really soft."

"I thought you wore a beanie to bed?"

"Bonnet. And, it's extra protection."

"Like wearing a condom when you're on birth control?"

You sighed and shook your head.

"Yeah. Sure."

"Hey, Mom?" Riley asked as she came into the room.

"Yeah?"

"Do you think I could have a friend over for dinner?"

"What friend?"

"Jack."

"Uh...sure."

"Thanks!"

She smiled and went back to her room.

"Am I really about to meet my daughter's first boyfriend?"

"I think you are."

"She's growing up so fast."

"Hopefully not too fast. I don't trust this kid."

"Of course you don't."

"Hey, what's for dinner?" Peter asked as he joined Jason at the table.

"Since it's a special occasion, I'm making chicken, greens, macaroni, and candied yams."

"God, I love you."

A few minutes later, the doorbell rang, and Riley came rushing down the stairs.

"I got it!"

She fixed her hair and outfit a bit before opening it.

"Hi."

"Hey."

"You look nice."

"Thanks. You too."

She let him and and led him into the kitchen.

"Hi. You must be Jack." You smiled.

"I am. You must be Riley's older sister."

"Oh, you're so sweet. I'm her mom."

"And I'm her very protective stepdad." Peter said as he came up behind you.

"Ignore him."

You all sat around the table and and ate while trying to make conversation.

"So, you're like an Avenger?" The boy asked Peter.

"A Guardian."

"Oh. Sorry."

"They're very different. The Guardians are much cooler."

"Right."

"So, how did you two meet?" Jason asked.

"Art class."

"That's so cute. Riley loves art." You smiled.

"She's really good."

"You want a beer, John?" Peter asked.

"Jack. And I don't drink."

"Good answer."

"Would you leave the poor kid alone?"

"I'm just being thorough."

"Well, thanks for dinner." Riley said as she stood up. "We're gonna go watch a movie in my room."

"No, you're not."

"Peter, come on." She groaned.

"Just keep the door open." You told her.

"Thanks, Mom!"

They went upstairs and into her room.

"You really think it's a good idea to let them go in her room?"

"I have to trust her. My parents were always controlling, and I ended up falling in love with an a*shole."

"I just worry about her."

"She's a smart girl. She'll be okay."

After Jack had left, and Jason had gone to sleep you went into Riley's room and sat on the bed.

"Hey, munchkin."

"Hey."

"You have fun?"

"Yeah. We just watched a movie and hung out. Nothing weird."

"I trust you."

"Peter doesn't."

"He trusts you. He just doesn't trust Jack."

"Jack is a nice guy."

"I'm sure he is."

"So, are you guys like gonna get married or something now?"

"No. We're not getting married. We're just together."

"Okay."

"You know, I don't think I ever really asked you how you'd feel about having a stepdad."

"A few months ago, I would've said no. But, I really like Peter."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. He's nice, funny, helpful. He clearly makes you happy. And, he's been a better father to me than dad has ever been."

"You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear you say that."

You wrapped an arm around her and kissed her forehead.

"I love you, Mom."

"I love you too, Riley."
