June 26-St. Charles, Missouri

"Hey." Jason said to you as you walked through the door. He was sitting at the kitchen counter doing something on his computer.

"Hey."

"How was work?"

"Good. I'm really sore, though. I've been on my feet all day."

"You know what'll make you feel better?"

"What?"

"If you come look at these houses."

"Are you still on that?"

"Just look."

You picked up Lucy and sat on the bar stool next to him and looked at the screen.

"Okay, I'm looking."

"This is a nice place. It's got 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a garage, and a laundry room."

"It's nice. But, we already have a house."

"Roxanne, I'm serious about this. Keeping this house would do you no good."

"I mean...it is a really nice house."

"You two need to tour it."

"You still need to convince your grandson."

"I'm sure you can do that."

"I don't know. He's stubborn."

"Who's stubborn?" Riley asked as she joined you in the kitchen.

"Peter."

"Are we moving?"

"We don't know yet."

"I'm tryna convince your parents to sell the house after I'm gone."

"Why would they do that?"

"They can use the money to get a new place. A nice place."

"We just moved, though."

"We won't move right away. But, maybe it's a good idea."

"Really?"

"Yeah. 3 bedrooms. You can use yours when you come to visit from college."

"I actually really like this place."

Peter opened the door and came up to the group.

"What are we looking at?"

"Houses."

"For what?"

"We might sell the house."

"What? Why would we sell the house?"

"So that you can have a new place after I'm gone."

"Don't say things like that."

"We're all on board. You're the only one who has a problem with it."

"You guys think we should move?"

"It might be a good idea, babe."

"Mom's right. We won't need this big house pretty soon."

"I can't believe you're all okay with this."

"It's just a house, Pete."

"Unbelievable." He scoffed and went into your room.

You got up and followed him into the room and closed the door.

"What is your problem?" You asked.

"My problem? What's your problem? How could you even think about selling the house?"

"It's not like I already sold it! I just thought about it!"

"He gave us this house, and you just wanna get rid of it?"

"He gave me the house, and it was his idea!"

"He has cancer! He doesn't know what he's saying!"

"Why are you so obsessed? It's just a house!"

"It's not just a house, Roxy! It's the only thing I have left of my family!"

He sat on the bed and placed his head in his hands. You sat behind him and wrapped your arms around him.

"I'm sorry."

"No, I'm sorry. It's not your fault. I shouldn't have yelled at you."

"I just got so wrapped up in the idea of starting a life together, that I didn't even think about what this house meant to you."

"I just don't want the only thing I have from my family to be a few wrinkled photos."

"We don't have to sell the house."

"You sure?"

"Yeah. If living here is what helps you feel connected to your family, then that's where we'll live."

"Thank you."

You held him tighter and softly kissed his jawline. He placed his hands over yours and gave them a squeeze.

"I love you."

"I love you too."

"Hey, Pete!" Jason called from his room.

"Yeah?"

"Come in here for a moment!"

He got up off the couch and went into the room.

"Hey."

"Have a seat."

He sat next to him on the bed and looked over to him.

"What's up?"

"I have something for you."

He handed him a small black box and watched him open it.

"A ring?"

"It was your grandmother's."

"It's beautiful."

"I kept it after she died in hopes that maybe one day you would find some use for it."

"What are you saying?"

"Nothing. I'm just putting the idea out there."

"It hasn't even been 2 months yet!"

"I'm not saying you have to do it now. I'm just saying that you have it for when the time is right. Whenever that may be."

"Thank you, Grandpa."

He carefully hugged him and patted his back.

"I love ya, Pete."

"I love you too."
