May 4-St. Charles, Missouri
"You seem different." Riley said as you pulled up to the school.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"What did you do this weekend?"
"I watched TV in my pajamas and drank wine."
"I don't buy it."
"Why not?"
"Because, you seem so relaxed and chill."
"I'm always chill."
"No. You are the opposite of chill."
"Don't you have a class to go to?"
"I'll figure out your secret."
"Bye, munchkin."
"Bye."
You laughed at the young girl and began heading to work. You were a bit nervous to see Peter again. You just hoped that Jason didn't know about anything. After pulling up to the house, you got out and walked inside.
"Hey, Roxy!"
"Hey, Mr. Quill! How're you feeling?"
"Same old same old."
"That's not good."
"Hey, can we talk about something?"
"Yeah, of course."
You sat down at the table with him and listened to him talk.
"We both know that I ain't getting better."
"I know."
"I don't know how long I have, but, I know that I want to spend it with my family."
"That's very sweet."
"Besides Pete, you and Riley are the only family I got. I want to make the most of the time I have left."
"What'll you do first?"
"Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to fire you."
"I'm sorry?"
"Rox-"
"I don't understand. What are you saying?"
"You can't work here anymore because I want you and Riley to move in here."
"What?"
"Not only am I gonna need more help soon, but, I want to spend my time with my loved ones."
"Oh, Mr. Quill-"
"I think we're at the point where you can call me Jason."
"Jason, that's very kind of you. But, I can't accept that offer."
"Why not?"
"I don't want us to be a bother."
"You wouldn't be. The house is gonna be yours anyway."
"What?"
"When I die, this house is yours."
"Why not Peter?"
"I changed the will when he came back, and he's getting everything else. But, the house goes to you."
"I don't know what to say."
"Say yes to moving in here."
"I don't know."
"I'm sure Peter would be happy to have you."
"Where is Peter?"
"In the attic. He's going through some of his old stuff."
"You mind if I go up?"
"Be my guest."
You walked into the hallways and slowly climbed up the step ladder. The small room was hot and smelled like dust. Peter stood in the middle of the room looking through boxes. He danced to the music on his phone as you came up.
"Wishin' on a shootin' star, say a prayer for me, and hope it comes true. Throw my phone out the window, there's no player in me. Those days are through."
He sang with his back to you as he looked through boxes.
"Hey."
"Roxy. Hi."
"You know Silk Sonic?"
"I just started listening to them a few days ago."
"You sorting through your old stuff?"
"Yeah. There's so much stuff up here, it's taken me two weeks to get this far."
"I hope I'm not interrupting you."
"Not at all. I enjoy the company."
"Is that you?" You asked as you pointed to a photo of a baby.
"Yup. That's all me."
"You were so cute."
"I think I'm still pretty cute."
"Oh, totally. You're adorable."
You sorted through some of the boxes until you found a small polaroid.
"Peter."
"Hm?"
"Look at this."
"Oh my God."
It was old and dusty, but you could tell that it was the two of you.
"Where were we?" He asked.
"I think that was the playground a few blocks away."
"I'm just saying, it's kinda freaky that we're back in the same place we were 30 years ago."
"Good point."
"See? Serendipity."
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever, spaceman."
"If you ever change your mind, about leaving, leaving me behind. Baby, bring it to me. Bring your sweet loving. Bring it on home to me"
"Dance with me."
"I'm not dancing with you."
He put on hands on your waist and swayed with you.
"I know I laughed when you left. But now I know I only hurt myself. Baby, bring it to me. Bring your sweet loving. Bring it on home to me."
"You know, it kinda looks like you're dancing with me."
"Shut up."
"If you keep being mean to me, I'll fall in love with you."
"That's actually really depressing."
"Yeah. Blame it on my rough childhood."
He grabbed your hand and spun you around.
"What are we doing?" You asked.
"We're dancing to Sam Cooke."
"No. What are we doing? We're acting like we didn't just sleep together. I don't wanna be that girl, but, what is this?"
"I want to be with you, Roxy."
"You do?"
"I've wanted to be with you longer you know."
You kissed him and pulled him closer to you.
"It's about time!" Jason said from downstairs.
"Were you spying on us?" Peter asked.
"Not spying. Just listening."
"It kinda sounds like you were spying."
"That's not the point."
"And what is the point?" You asked.
"That you two kids are finally together. I'm happy for you."
You looked over at Peter and laughed before resting your head on his shoulder. He wrapped his arm around your shoulders and kissed your forehead.
"Thanks, Grandpa."
"So? Are you gonna move in?"
You thought about it for a minute and hesitated before answering.
"Yeah. Why not?"
