June 5-St. Charles, Missouri

Riley sat next to Jason as you and Peter came into the hospital room.

"Happy Birthday." He smiled as he set the cake down on the counter.

"Since we can't light candles in here, you're just gonna have to pretend to blow them out."

"I'm sorry that you have to spend your birthday in here, Riley." Jason said.

"It's fine, Grandpa. Besides, this is a lot better than my sweet 16."

"What happened?" Peter asked.

"I broke my wrist roller skating."

"Well, if you break your wrist now, at least you're in a hospital." You laughed.

You stuck the candles into the cake and set it on the tray table. After singing and pretending to blow out the candles, Peter began cutting the cake.

"You ready for your present?" You asked her.

"Mom, you didn't have to get me anything."

"I didn't."

You handed her the white envelope and watched her face light up.

"Is this what I think it is?"

"It came in the mail this morning."

She tore the envelope and pulled out the folded piece of paper.

"I can't read it." She handed it to Peter. "You do it."

He unfolded the paper and began reading it.

"Oh, kid. I'm sorry."

"I knew it."

"I'm sorry that you're gonna have to go to school with all those idiots."

"What?"

"I mean, you're gonna be the smartest one there by far."

"I got in?" He handed her the letter and she smiled when she read it. "Oh my God! I got in!"

"We're so proud of you, munchkin."

She tightly hugged you and Peter before gently embracing Jason.

"I'm going to college!"

"You're going to college!"

"I love you guys."

"We love you too."

Peter and Riley were out getting lunch while you stayed in the room with Jason. You flipped through the TV channels until you found something decent.

"They both could've fit on that door." You said.

"They could not have."

"All she had to do was move over."

"They would've both died."

"I'm just saying."

You sat in silence for a bit until he turned to you.

"You should sell the house."

"What?"

"When I'm gone. Sell it and buy a new place."

"I can't do that."

"Yeah, you can. It's yours."

"Peter would never go for that."

"Convince him. By holding onto the house, you're holding onto the past. I want you all to move on and start your life together."

"We aren't selling the house."

"You could buy a nice farm."

"A farm?"

"Get some animals. It'll be great."

"I don't know."

"Are you really gonna deny a dying man his final wish?"

"You can't just play the dying card whenever you want."

"I can, and I will."

"The house stays."

"Think about it."

"I'll briefly consider it."

"Works for me."

"Hey." Peter said as he and Riley walked into the room. "I just talked to the doctor. She said that you can come home in a few days."

"Thank God. I hate hospitals."

"Me too." The young girl agreed. "It smells like old people. No offense."

"None taken."

He held up the bag of food and began unloading it.

"Hungry?"

"Starving." The 3 of you said.
