Secrets in the Woods- Beomkai

The cracked sanctuary broke

Kai woke up and kissed his boyfriend goodmorning. Even his morning breath was sweet. He promised him breakfast and went downstairs after he did his morning routine.

Yeonjun was sitting alone eating a bowl of cereal. He kept shifting in his seat and Kai got PTSD remembering the sounds he heard last night. He didnt even want to look Yeonjun in the eye. He couldnt without remembering "oh god Tae you look so hot with my nuts in your mouth". Kai shook his head and chose some captain crunch and was about to take it upstairs until Yeonjun asked him to sit down.

"If youre wondering where the other two are, theyre out fishing. Soobin said Taehyun couldnt catch more fish than him and they rushed out." Yeonjun's tone was flat. There wasn't his usual cheer or sarcasm. He didnt bother to look at Kai either. "I needed to talk to you alone anyways."

Kai takes the seat next to Yeonjun, facing the backdoor so he could keep an eye on the other two. Captain crunch pours into his bowl and he stares at it, waiting for Yeonjun to talk.

"Kai you know Soobin better than anyone. I want to know your opinion because maybe it's just in my head." This cant be good Kai thinks. He starts studying the captain's face to distract his thoughts. Maybe Yeonjun knows about Beomgyu.

"Did something happen?"

Yeonjun takes a deep breath and looks behind him to confirm they were still alone. Kai tells him he's got his eye on the door. The signal will be a thumbs up if they start walking up.

"Yesterday, after the hunting trip, Soobin told us to prep and freeze the ducks so he could go hunting again. We managed to gather 10 birds between us and we still have a whole deer in the freezer so it didnt make sense but he insisted." Yeonjun looks back at the door again and then to the gun cabinet. "Oh that reminds me... we ended up using an extra case of bullets. Sorry...our aim is shit compared to yours"

Kai told him he didnt care and to continue the story.

"...right. Well we heard a couple of gunshots in the distance but Soobin came back empty handed. He had blood dripping down his arm. He tried hiding it but I saw it. Tae didnt notice. I asked him what happened and he said his kill was stolen by a pack of wolves. He went to his bedroom after and I could hear him showering. He sounded like he was in pain. Do you believe him?"

Kai continued to stare at the captain's face. He remembered seeing vultures circling an area to the east last night. Whether Yeonjun should know about it was another story.

He thought some more and decided to tell Yeonjun what he wanted to hear. "I believe him. A wolf mightve scratched him or something but I dont think its anything worth being concerned about."

Yeonjun looked relieved and asked what took him so long last night. He told him what he told Soobin and they started talking about what they wanted to do when the trip was over.

Taehyun and Soobin walked in an hour later stinking of fish. Yeonjun greeted his boyfriend with a "hey baby! So who won the contest?"

"I did." claimed Taehyun.

"What are you talking about? I caught 5 more than you did!"

Soobin looked at Taehyun offended. "So what? Yours were half of the size of mine! One of mine was as long as my forearm!"

"Thats not the brag you think it is midget."

Yeonjun and Tae smack Soobin at the same time. "Shut up you over grown rabbit."
Kai laughs loudly which makes everyone do the same.

The clouds start to roll in and the sunlight starts to disappear. A filter of gray begins to cover the forest and the winds start to pick up. Kai knew if there was something suspicious in the east, he would have to leave soon or that evidence would be gone. "Hey guys Im going to take a ride on my dirt bike before it starts to rain. Ill be back in an hour." Taehyun and Yeonjun tells him to have fun and be safe meanwhile Soobin glares at him. His eyes follow Kai.

The unmistakably heavy steps of Choi Soobin follow Kai into the detached garage. Kai turns around and asks "miss me already?" and winks.

"Never. Just wondering why you would choose to go riding if theres a chance of rain. You hate rain."

"Id rather do it now while its dry before the dirt turns into mud."

Soobin looks at Joshua's bike. "Can I join you?"
Kai contemplates letting him join. If he came, it might be for the better. He wants Soobin to explain it himself if he sees what he thinks he will. "Sure. Its your funeral if you break his bike though."

The two walk over to a closet in the garage and grab some hellcat helmets and harley davidson leather jackets. Joshua's jacket didn't quite fit Soobin so he grabbed Mr. Huenings jacket instead. He sees the signatures of every member of Nirvana stitched into the jacket and asks Kai why something that valuable was used for dirt racing. Kai tells him his dad met the band a couple years ago and the jacket in the closet is just a copy of the original jacket. That one is hanging in his office. Soobin guessed the copy was worth at least $2,000 and it still didnt make sense to him but hes learned by now this is just how the Huenings lived.

With the roar of the bikes, they set off into the woods with Kai leading. Thunder started to compete with the two engines and Kai lead Soobin to his favorite racing path. The clearing in the forest was filled with bumps to jump over and ridges to slice through. Soobin started to lose Kai around a turn and almost smacked straight into a nearby pine tree. "KAI SLOW DOWN!"

"CATCH UP BIG BUNNY!" Kai yelled back. He did not slow down. If anything he went even faster than he did before. Eventually he returned to where he started and feared he actually did lose Soobin. A minute passed and Kai was relieved to hear a familiar roar pull up next to him. "I win."

Soobin smacked Kai's helmet and laughed. "Cheater."
"Loser."

They set off once more and Kai lead them east to where he saw the vultures circling the night before. Kai took his helmet off, parked his bike next to a raspberry bush and started to walk. He knelt on the ground and looked for any unnatural signs of disturbed earth. "What are you looking for?" Kai ignored him and kept walking. Every 30 paces he stopped to kneal again and kept following a path only he could see. They came to a tree with an unnatural scratch at the base and Kai knew he was close. Soobin knew it too.

"Kai. Please. Lets turn around. Theres nothing here. Its going to start pouring soon." It was. The thunder was getting louder and coming roughly every 2 minutes. Lightning started to light up the sky and the humidity rose.

Soobin's protests went entirely ignored by Kai as he kept walking. He finally came upon a fresh mound of dirt with a stray vulture sitting on it. The vulture looked up and flew away. "Kai please. Kai lets go back." Rain was now softly falling and Kai began to dig. Soobin gently pulled him back but was shaken off. Kai began digging faster. "Theres nothing here Kai! Please!" Kai's hands felt something cold beneath the earth. He grabbed onto whatever his hands touched as Soobin violently yanked him away.

Thunder was now heard every minute and lightning crackled against the clouds. It was dark and wet now. One large bolt of lightning gave Kai enough light to see the dead body in his finger tips. Soobin froze. Kai's right hand slipped into his belt and with one quick motion, he pointed a 9 mil at his best friend.
