How Taehyun met Kai

Yeonjun and Taehyun went downstairs after Kai gave them permission. They decide to watch some Netflix.

"Stranger things? That sounds dumb. How it is trending at number 1?" Taehyun asks.

"You havent seen stranger things? How? Its like the most talked about show of the year!"

"Well my parents cant really afford Netflix. I tried to pirate a movie from them one day but I felt guilty so I stopped it mid-download."

Yeonjun squishes Taehyun's cheek and tells him how cute he is. Before they start the first season, Yeonjun asks if Tae wants to explore the basement a little more. Tae says no because Kai didn't give them permission. Yeonjun bargained only going into one room and Tae said yes after a lot of hesitation.

They leave and walk out the door to the left. The first door they meet was electronically coded. They walk again and this door had 3 different locks each with different keyholes. The last door to the left ended up just being a bathroom. "I can see why Kai only showed us those two rooms now." Yeonjun says disappointed.

This time they go down another hall and see more locked doors. "Think Kai will tell us whats in those rooms?" Yeonjun asks.

"Probably not. I think theres a reason we havent been invited down here before. Its most likely heirlooms the family keeps hidden for protection."

Yeonjun leads them down the last hallway and finds an open door. "Yeonjun I dont feel good about this. Kai trusted us. This feels wrong." He pushes the door open anyways.

"Wow. This is disappointing." says a grumpy Yeonjun.

The room is a bedroom for a little boy. A dusty bed is in the center of the backwall, surrounded by photos of various baseball legends, Jackie Robbinson being the biggest poster. To the right is a big toy box overflowing with stuffed animals. To the left lies an old bean bag chair in front of the closet. Yeonjun decides theres nothing interesting so he starts to walk out. If they looked in the closet, they wouldve seen boxes and boxes of every vintage comic imaginable. Millions of dollars worth of collectors books were in there.

On the way back, Yeonjun sees a photo of little Kai holding up a certificate with little Taehyun standing next to him on the wall. "This is so cute! When was this?"

Taehyun walks over and looks at the photo. "Second grade" he replies. "I won a math contest and Kai won a spelling bee."

"You know youve known Kai longer than I have. Why didnt you come on his trips until last year?" Yeonjun regrets asking because he knew the answer. Sometimes he just couldnt help himself.

"I worked every summer I could. Lemonade stands, dog walked, eventually got an under the table job doing dishes in a restaurant until I could legally work. I had to help my parents with the bills. Our house was going to be foreclosed on. We were about to be homeless."

"I'm so sorry Taehyun." Yeonjun knew the Kangs always had financial trouble but he didnt know just how bad it was.

"Joshua and Kai bought the house my parents live in 2 years ago. They dont know that I know. It was supposed to be an 'anonymous donor' but their faces said it all when I told them. I dont even know how they found out. I never told Kai my family's financial issues. They didnt have rent to worry about now so thats when I felt I could take a month off of working and just be free."

Yeonjun hugged his boyfriend and they started walking back to the theater. He would never tell Taehyun that he was the one who told Kai about the Kang's situation. When Taehyun told Yeonjun he couldnt afford to do soccer anymore, thats when he reached out to Kai. The Huenings probably pulled up the Kang family files and saw all the missed payments.
